How many wake up calls do we need to understand everything around us is falling apart? From the economy to our decaying moral fiber, we are walking a treacherous path from which recovery may be next to impossible. Here are some mind-bending statistics for you to decide. Where is humanity headed? This is part one of a multi-part series.
Vital Statistics : Theory of Devolution
Part 1 of the Multi-Part
"Stats Incredible!" Series
by John Mortera *

We, as a society, are dying. Our bodies mainfest with illness and brain rot. Our thoughts self-serving and salacious. Steered by money, power, and greed; we have become cowards and liars; cheats and murderers. Worst of all, we are a race in denial. We have lost the ability to face the truth. Why? It is easier to buy the lie because it is convenient - although the payback comes at a heavy price, one we can't afford. We have become a floating barge of death navigating turbulent seas with a broken moral compass.

The figures you are about to absorb are aboslutely staggering. They are grotesque, disturbing, bizarre ... yet, sad to say ; true. It is difficult to imagine how we have allowed things to come this far. These distortions are specially disturbing when we take into account the fact that we are de facto stewards of our one and only planet.

It is with great regret and a trite sense of humor that I present my 'Theory of Human Devolution'. The fundamental is based on a simple formulaic equation derived from common sense.

(Ignorance + Arrogance * Greed ) - (Compassion + Accountability) = Devolution

(Compassion + Accountability) - (Ignorance + Arrogance * Greed ) = Evolution

I don't need a doctorate or fancy acronyms to support my claim, instead I have enclosed the following stats and figures. I hope this serves as a point of reference for those of us who wish to improve the quality of our lives.

Although the stats seem unrelated, they are part and parcel of the big picture. One affects the other. The numbers have gotten so large that even in this highly condensed form, the entire scope of issues that need to be addressed could only be handled in installments and small doses. Please read and understand carefully. This is a snapshot of humanity as we know it today. These are times in which we live. It is of the utmost importance for us to realize this is what we have become as a people. We have paved the road to our demise and signed our own death warrants. It is time we acknowledged our contributions to our own collective moral bankruptcy. We are all guilty . We are the problem. We too are the solution.

Let us ponder this reality with the utmost sobriety, humility, and compassion. This is the big picture.

$7,026,518,633,893.23 - The National Debt as of 1/30 2004.

- Source: National Debt Clock

(The National Debt has continued to increase an average of $2 billion per day since September 30, 2003; and growing)

Fact: A stack of Currency one-mile high would contain more than 14.5 million one-dollar notes. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The national debt amount stacked in the same fashion would create a column 484,587 miles high. The distance from the earth to the moon is only 238,857 miles. That's enough to make it to the moon and back without a refill. (My calculator almost broke during this equation)

$23,967.90 - Each US citizen's share of the national debt. (The average American household of three owes more than $7,000 in credit-card debt.)

Approximately 1 out of every 100 mortgages in America is currently in foreclosure, and 1 in every 5 American mortgages is more than 30 days late. Bankruptcies and home foreclosures in America have now reached an all-time high. (20-June-2003)

Homelessness has now risen above the levels seen during the Great Depression.

$14 Billion dollars : The Cost of Three Months In Iraq - Pentagon
( source: John J. Lumpkin/ Associated Press Writer/ 2-12-4)

$213 billion : The amount needed to finance the war and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan.

11,000 to 22,000 : The number of US soldiers, sailors and Marines medically evacuated from Iraq by the end of 2003 because of battlefield wounds, illness or other reasons

11,500 : The number of (Iraqi) civilians who have died since March last year.

"Greater precision is not possible. America and Britain have not only declined to count the number of civilians killed, but have obstructed any attempts to discover the total. The Iraqi Health Ministry tried to collect data on deaths several months ago, but was ordered to stop." - (By David Randall/ 5-25-4) -  http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/story.jsp?story=523991

Halliburton has more than $9 BILLION (4.8bn) worth of contracts in Iraq, more than any other company - ( David Teather/ The Guardian - UK/ 2-18-4)

45 : Number of Journalists Assassinated in Iraq Last year (International Federation of Journalists)

HEROIN production in Afghanistan has soared by up to 1400 per cent since the war on terror and the fall of the Taliban, a drugs conference will hear today. The United Nations Drug Control Programme estimates the "total likely yield" of this year's opium poppy crop will be between 1900 and 2700 metric tons, compared with 185 tons last year.- (Duncan Roberts/ news.scotsman.com/9-26-02)

Bush Will Not Stop Afghan Opium Trade

The Bush administration has decided not to destroy the opium crop in Afghanistan. President Bush, who previously linked the Afghan drug trade directly to terrorism, has now decided not to destroy the Afghan opium crop. - (Charles R. Smith/ Newsmax, 3-28, 2002)

400,000 (estimated) veterans of the first U.S. invasion of Iraq in 1991 have the chronic illness dubbed "Gulf War Syndrome."

Research scientists strongly link this pattern of sickness and death to Depleted Uranium exposure ; otherwise known as DU.

DU is 0.7 times as radioactive as natural uranium. Since DU HAS A HALF-LIFE OF 4.5 BILLION YEARS, there is very little decay of those DU materials.
In case any of you missed that, DEPLETED URANIUM REMAINS RADIOACTIVE FOR 4.5 BILLION YEARS. This is not a typo.

The U.S. dropped 375 tons of DU on Iraq during the first Gulf War, and 2,200 tons during the current invasion.

Millions of Iraqis died of preventable diseases from the obliteration of water and health systems by bombing and 12 years of sanctions starting in 1990. More recently, Iraqi doctors began to note an ominous increase in cancer and diseases of the immune systems.

About 156 people an hour will learn they have cancer this year, according to new data from the American Cancer Society. And by the end of this year, scientists predict, 563,700 people in the USA will have died from the disease. - ( Robert Davis, USA TODAY 1/14/2004)

In the UK:

270,000 : Number of people in the UK who were told they had cancer in 2000 - up 3,000 from the previous year.

27,200 : The number of people who were told they have prostate cancer. An increase of 25% over a period of five years

7,000 : diagnosed cases of malignant melanoma in 2000 : jumped to up 16% in one year.
5,600 : cases of uterine cancer; 1,000 more compared to 1999 - an 8% increase

- (UK Association of Cancer Registries, which register all cancer cases in the UK.)

Hepatitis C has been dubbed "the silent epidemic" by doctors, who are warning that rates of the disease in Britain are soaring while most people remain unaware they are infected. More than 400,000 people in the UK have the disease, and 100 new infections are occurring every week. It is already the main reason for liver transplants, and experts say that by 2020 it will be killing more people than Aids. (The Independent - UK ; 2-2-04)
