ACTION and ORGANIZING 101

Beyond letter writing and changing our consumer habits there is a world of grassroots organizing and resistance--from meeting bulldozers in the forests to CEOs in their boardrooms. Come learn basic skills for creating successful actions to help save the little that remains of ancient forests. Meet others that share concerns about the corporate domination of public lands. Turn your concerns into ACTION.

Topics will include: group building, know your rights, strategy, tactics, nonviolence, consensus, media, outreach, anti-oppression & the environmental movement, the Northwest Forest Plan, Mt. Hood timber sales, First Aid and more with an emphasis on putting these skills directly to use here in Portland to defend Mt. Hood and to call attention to the Forest Service and the timber industry's wanton destruction of National Forests. That being said, many of these workshops would be useful to a variety of groups and situations and we welcome all levels of experience.

Longstanding action oriented groups like the Cascadia Forest Alliance (see  http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2003/10/273657.shtml) and others are no longer active in Portland - please come and join others interested in revitalizing Portland's tradition of active, radical, grassroots resistance!

Basic Schedule (same on Saturday and Sunday):

10:30am - 11:00am meet and gather at NE corner of the park
11:00am - 2:30pm Indepth workshop session
2:30pm - 3:30pm Fun, games, low-key optional workshop
3:30pm - 5:00 pm Breakout/focused workshop session

We'd LoVE help with publicity and outreach - contact information is below!

Nice work 14.May.2004 13:11

Way to go folks, this is exactly what needs to be happening to reinvigorate the Portland area radical forest defense community. This is going to be one hell of a summer with Bush's last gasp meaning the potential irreversible loss of thousands of acres of ancient forests, wild country and critter habitat across the Oregon. There's no more room for compromise when it comes to protecting our last native forests.

Education, outreach and action. Building radical communities with ties to mainstream knowledge and activism. Not isolating ourselves but reaching out and working with others who may not look like us, listen to the same music, or whatever. Taking strategic uncompromising action in defense of the earth. Thoughtfully waging guerilla and mainstream campaigns simultaneously in ways that augment each other.

CFA worked hard doing the above kind of work for years and perhaps burned out, or was hijacked by any number of distracting dilemmas. This summer, let us bring back the days when forest activists and allies are regularly taking over streets and buildings in Portland and blocking winding roads in the mountains. With dozens of Portland activists initiating, participating in and supporting forest defense campaigns from Mt. Hood to the Siskiyous and everywhere in between.

This spring and summer, there is no better time to hold accountable the Forest Service, BLM, the Bush Administration and timber companies as they make one last timber grab before Bush has to flee back to Texas after November.

The last stands of wild forest and the critters that depend on them for survival can't defend themselves. But we can, and must, take action in their defense.

Come to the June 5-6 forest action and organizing workshops. And then lets put our new found knowledge and skills into action to kick off the summer right and turn the tide against timber machine.

fight corporate power in SF on june 7-9 14.May.2004 16:57

meddle meddle@riseup.net

hey all--

what appears to be the biggest west coast direct action of the year is coming up right after this conference. people will be pouring into san francisco from all over to shut-down the biotech-pharmaceutical industry conference on june 8th in solidarity with the G8 call to target corporate power all across the nation. there's also a day of racial/economic justice actions on the 7th and a day of greening actions in the city on the 9th.

reclaimthecommons.net has a ton of details, but it'd be great to co-ordinate the days of actions -- primarily june 6-9 -- with this training and maybe get a bus or two of portland folks headed down here afterwards. we can also cross-promote if anyone's into it.

plan for rose parade 04.Jun.2004 12:35

rosy

the best part of the rose parade occurs from 8am to 10am when groups parade up and down the route pushing their own causes-usually the anti-abortionts. no reason groups touting anti-war messages, proforests groups, anti-gmo groups couldn't join to get out their messages to the 50+thousand parade watchers. great opportunity to spread the word!
