So everyone is willing to report that a molotov was thrown at starbucks last night, around 11. Witnesses saw fire department trucks, but no one I spoke to had seen any evidence of fire.
There could have been a molotov thrown last night, but either way, the window was boarded up. At that point a security agency was contacted and they began to "protect" starbucks.
One person biking past at 2am saw another window, on the south side of starbucks being boarded up. but claims that the other windows on the south side were still intact.
But this morning there was a second window boarded up on the south side.
My conclusion is that there were a multiple number of strikes, many of them after the security agency was contacted. fat lot of good they did.
The day took on a different atmosphere. From 2-6pm Starbucks was giving away free food and drinks, and a large crew of dirty trainhopper kids took up residence, using all the tables. eating starbucks food and hoping to scare away customers.
They say they are dedicated to loitering and trying to bum money off customers to keep traffic down.
One was positioned across the road with a "fuck starbucks" sign.
The corporate PR representative refused to speak, even off camera, to representatives from both portland indymedia and the portland alliance. repeatedly they said they were there to speak to people from 'respectable media sources only"
which, is, of course, entertaining by this point.
Keeping their costs up with a security prescense is great. And best of all, it seems like the security presence is completely useless. When asked, apparently the security guard on duty said that yes, he was allowed to 'citizens arrest' people, but he wasn't allowed to chase anyone.
Keeping their proceeds down by making the atmosphere uncomfortable to yuppies is great.
There were people there leafleting customers, but only a few people. if respecatble looking people were touting the alternatives, that would be really positive. with a diversity of tactics, we will win.
