Portland Hates Hate

Rev. Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, KS is sending his minions up to Oregon this weekend to protest queers and queer allies.
Best known for his protest at Matthew Shepard's funeral and his website, www.godhatesfags.com, Rev Fred Phelps has targeted various locations in Portland, Beaverton and Salem to protest a queer's right to life, love and state-sanctioned unions.

PSU, the courthouses, churches, high schools and city hall are all on their hitlist as places that condone queer lifestyle. Phelps announced previously that he was planning on coming to Beaverton to protest an art exhibit that accepted all families, including same-sex ones. However, due to the overwhelming number of other queer-friendly activities going on in the country, a spokesperson from the Westboro Church said that they were going to have to reschedule. So here they come.

And here we are. Various organizations around the city are planning on meeting Phelps at his protests. The key to countering Phelps is to drown out his message and to minimize any impact that his followers may have on the public.

On Sunday, April 18th, Phelps is planning on coming to PSU. When I called the Westboro Church, they stated that they were hitting PSU because PSU advocates homosexuality one way or another and that "sodomy is a fag's religion" and that, since PSU is state-funded, there needs to be a separation of religion and state. ????? Anyhow, we're going to be there to block their homophobic message no matter how they justify it. According to their schedule, they will be there at 11 am. Bring a bedsheet to block their message from getting out. This is an effective tactic that has been applied to several of Phelp's protest, including one that was countered in Chicago by the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network.

On Monday, April 19th, Queer Revolution is planning on countering Phelps at PDX City Hall at 9:15am. The planned tactic for this protest is a minimal queer party that could be made bigger by everyone's attendance. Pinata's and music will be provided. Costumes and outrageous dress are encouraged. Remember, the key is distraction and misguided focus away from the message of hate.

Portland has become a model of sorts for gay marriage and needs to defend it's priviledge now. See you on the streets

Fred Phelps Queer Youth Pledge Drive! 16.Apr.2004 19:24

Jane

The group unisex from Lewis and Clark College has organized a pledge drive to take place during Fred Phelps' speech on Sunday at 11:00 at PSU. People pledge to donate a certain amount of money for every minute Fred talks, and the proceeds go to a local queer resource center (I forget the acronym - SMYRC?). We (unisex) have emailed Fred to let him know that the longer he talks, the more money he raises for a queer cause.
Representatives from unisex will be at Fred's talk.

For more information about unisex or to email comments or questions, check out the website.
The site has a lot of information about the gender-blind or "neutral" housing option being implemented at Lewis and Clark. A very good thing.

"how" "can" "god" "allow" "followers" to "live" "this" "way" 17.Apr.2004 05:19

. . .That night, while his hired men were asleep, his enemy sowed thistles all through the wheat and slipped away before dawn. 26When the first green shoots appeared and the grain began to form, the thistles showed up, too. "The farmhands came to the farmer and said, "Master, that was clean seed you planted, wasn't it? Where did these thistles come from?' "He answered, "Some enemy did this.' "The farmhands asked, "Should we weed out the thistles?' "He said, "No, if you weed the thistles, you'll pull up the wheat, too. Let them grow together until harvest time. Then I'll instruct the harvesters to pull up the thistles and tie them in bundles for the fire, then gather the wheat and put it in the barn.'"*

anywhere a culture can be found - there can also be found those "within" who do not "get it." christianity, islam, atheistic humanism, hinduism, taosim and so on. the above is a quote from the book of matthew (in the greek bible [aka new test.]) chapter 13. the context is that of messhiah describing the problem of "those within, working against" in the "kingdom of heaven" (which is theologically complex) via parable - that which is described is an ecclesial problem of evil - how can god allow "followers" to live in opposition to "the way(?)."

i cannot make the demonstrations - but as a christ follower i am (in a sense) glad to know that "those within, working against" face a certain opposition from "those without" and also "within" - not to make an unconscious religiocentric binary opposition that is offensive for offense's sake (as if the unconscious could be performed with intent - you know what i am trying to get at.). please, demonstrate!

*(msg, matthew 13:25-30)

let's protest...then party. 17.Apr.2004 22:08

Hey folks, after screaming expletives at a famed hateful bigot, let's party. Let's dispose of all personal issues by venting at good old fred. Just don't assume that by being a prescence that we will change anything about him. Sure, he'll get all of our attention, and though it may not be affirming, it'll be attention that he desires. People like fred were born angry, so let him be angry. I'll bring noise makers, you bring the oxygen.
Rumor has it that the UNISEX club at lewis and clark is planning an amazing DRAG show. What a better way to show fred then by celebrating who we are?! Let's do it for SMYRC! Let's do it for queers! Let's do it for fred!

Viva a hipcrisía cultural norte americana.
