Two US helicopter gunships reportedly downed in Iraq

09.04.2004, 03.31

BEIRUT, April 9 (Itar-Tass) - Two US helicopter gunships were reportedly downed near El-Falluja. One of the craft crashed in the Al-Qarma suburb and the other in a green locality close to the city.

The US command has not confirmed the loss of the helicopters so far.

On Thursday and overnight US aircraft delivered missile and bomb strikes on the northwest and east of the city with a 400.000 population. Street fighting was reported.

Residents of Kerbela and Al-Qut in the south of Iraq were reportedly engaged in fierce fighting with coalition forces. British aircraft provided support to Polish and Bulgarian servicemen in the areas.

American helicopter crashes in flames
07/04/2004 - 13:05:20

A US military helicopter crashed today and was seen burning on the ground as US troops fought Shiite militiamen in the central Iraqi city of Baqouba, a witness said.

There was no immediate word on casualties.

The crash came immediately after an explosion was heard, said an AP photographer at the site. He saw the helicopter on the ground in flames. US troops closed off the site.

It was not immediately known what caused the crash.

US troops and Shiite militiamen clashed today in Baqouba, 30 miles northeast of Baghdad.

During the fighting, militiamen hit the governor's offices with rocket-propelled grenades.

interesting to see how the news is coming out of Iraq during this chaos, and how Central Command fails to acknowledge or has conflicting information on events.

note how several different repostings of the Associated Press story alternately identify or leave anonymous the photographer who supposedly witnessed this crash:

Ireland On-Line version of AP story-
"The crash came immediately after an explosion was heard, said an AP photographer at the site."

Guardian UK version of AP story-
"The crash came immediately after an explosion was heard, said Mohammed Adnan, an AP photographer at the site."

here is another reference to the April 7 downing in a separate AP story on the mosque bombing -
"A U.S. helicopter crashed in Baqouba, 30 miles north of Baghdad, as American soldiers fought militiamen of fiery anti-U.S. Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, whose forces have been responsible for much of the violence outside of Ramadi and Fallujah. There was no word on casualties in the crash in a residential neighborhood, which was witnessed by Associated Press photographer Mohammed Adnan."
 http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-3950390,00.html

and another version of the directly above AP mosque story, where the helicopter is identified -
"In Baqouba, a US military helicopter made an emergency landing after it was hit by small arms fire, the military said. The military reported that no one was wounded in the incident and the military planned to transport the OH-58 Kiowa helicopter to a nearby base by truck. AP photographer Mohammed Adnan earlier said he heard an explosion and then saw a military helicopter burning on the ground in a field near a residential neighborhood in Baqouba. US troops closed off the site."

You will learn by watching CNN that Fallujah is a Shiite stronghold, although it is a Sunni stronghold. Constantly they put little headlines at the bottom of the screen that say "US battling Shiite forces in Kut, Najaf, and Fallujah"
