Nader nominating convention in Portland fails to attract necessary numbers

So okay, I admit this is second-hand info -- that is, I wasn't there, but I got a report from this event right afterward from a certain pink-haired rabble-rouser who was there.

Story is, in Oregon, if you can get 1000 people together in one physical location, you can nominate someone to the ballot in Oregon. So the plan to get Nader on the ballot this way. Personally, I was all for it. Anything to piss off those whiny Democrats, especially the ones still passing on the fallacy that Nader "lost the election" for Gore. (Hello! Something like 15% of the voting Democrats in Florida chose Bush! That would be Gore's problem, thank you very much! To say nothing of the tens of thousands of people of color illegally kicked off the rolls, and all the shenanigans at voting stations where people were turned away. Just go read gregpalast.com, crybabies.)

Anyway, only 600 people showed up (I was gardening until late and spaced that it was that day), so the plan failed. My pink-haired friend started heckling Ralph, though, and also aimed his sites at Portland lawyer, Greg Kaffoury, the spotlight-coveting Naderite well known for defending Tre Arrow (he gets points for that) and holding a prominent place in Nader's 2000 campaign. I guess he really laid into both of them.

I love seeing pedastals tipped, so I'm sorry I missed this performance. I'm sorry that Ralph won't be on the ballot. He has the best anti-corporate analysis of any of the candidates (and I saw Kucinich in person today, so I was able to compare) and when he gets angry, he can be inspiring. But he does deserve criticism (just not the bullshit ego-blah-blah crap the Democrats are trotting out).

Anyway, I was surprised not to see any reports about this on PDXIMC today, and I'm hoping people will add more to this account.

that pink haired idiot said nothing when Nader was speaking, Q&As are barely heckles...and he harassed they other guy for a minute. nothing to brag about, he just looked like a preoccupied moron. The laywer/teacher had common sense replies and that was that.
over 700 people were there, and now the campaign needs 15000 signatures by august. he will still be on the ballot. apparently there are more people helping him this year than in 00...so the complaining and blaming will continue.

Rabid Democrats go crazy at Nader event!!! 07.Apr.2004 08:29

Socialist Appeal wil@socialistappeal.org

The people who waited to hear Ralph Nader speak got to see what the Democrats are all about. They called people names, try to block and talk people out from going in to hear Nader and almost started several fights. It was a organized effort of passing out many anti-Nader leaflets and a handful of Rabid Democratic picketers. This after a all day media blitz where the Democrats brought out everyone and their Grandmother on TV to attack Nader on how he lost them the election.Nothing about the 50,000 Democrats in Flordia who voted for Bush or how Bush stole the election.

This election year the choice will be between Republican Bush,a millionarie Yale alumnus and member of the secret elite "Skull and Bones" society and Democrat Kerry, a millionarie Yale alumnus and member of the secret elite "Skull and Bones" society.

Bush's wealth is well known but people forget the that Kerry has the same class elite background.Little is said about his speed boat(the Scaramouche) that cost $750,000 and he paid in cash for, nor is it mention the palatial spa in Aspen he owns.Kerry castigates Bush for "special favors for special interests" but Kerry like Bush collects special interest money.

Kerry supported Bush's illegal predatory wars in Irag and Afganistan and attacks the democrated elected President of Venezuela, President Chavez.Voted for the Patroit Act,NAFTA,most of Bush's appointment's for Cabinent postions and tax program .

Now in his fourth term in the U.S. Senate, Kerry has been spectacularly unimpressive legislator, having organized the passage of just 7 bills, out of of 317 introduced durning 20 years. One of the bills he helped pass was Plan Colombia (1999) which among other things involves sending of military "advisors" to the brutal right-wing goverment(9 out of 10 trade unionists killed around the world are from Colombia) and the bill authorizes the chemical defoliation of rain forest.Under this legisation, 325,00 acres of it has been destoyed(another country that never attacked the U.S.) being sprayed with toxins in a phoney "War on Drugs" while cocaine production in that country has increased by 11 percent.

It is reported that Senator Kerry is connected to Enron, and to Enron's bank Citigroup through his multi-millionariess wife, whose HEINZ Environmental Defense Fund has Ken Lay on it's board of directors.Citigroup has been a major contributor to Kerry's various campaigns. In 1995 Kerry cast the deciding vote to overide Clinton's veto of the very bill used by Enron and Citigroup to conduct their wel-known consumer rip-offs.So much for clean goverment.

So we face an election in which both major party candidates enjoy unbelieveable wealth and power, and both support U.S. military agression overseas and austerity for the already impoverished at home. The Democrats and Repbulicans are two-sides of the same coin. Both candidates represent the parties of big-business capitalist class, and no matter who wins , it will be a goverment by and for the rich.

Many people have an "anyone but Bush" approach to the elections. Many support Kerry only because of his alleged "electability".But anyone who works for a living can be sure that under Kerry- the bosses, the bankers and the landlords of capital will prosper and rule.Kerry has never once challenged their rule, and he will certainly not do so if elected.Choosing a "lesser evil" is not a"democracy".The super-rich elite control both parties, working people urgently need a political party of our own-a mass party of labor based on the unions( a union for every worker that is not under the thumb of the "labor artistocracy"who hold workers to the Democrats who betray them election afer election) with a socialist program, to fight for our interests against Bush, Kerry and all the other greedy exploiters the Democrats and Republicans uniformly represent. I was at the rally. I think Nader should be on the ballot, but I don't know if I'll vote for him or not yet.
I think that was the worst organized event I've ever been to. Did they think that Nader's name would bring 1000? at one time on a basketball NCAA night? There was this jazz singer keeping the crowd entertained for awhile as people filed in. She was pretty good. Then came a band afterward who, although I enjoyed the music, I recognized it as loud and obnoxious to a lot of people. I think they drove a 100 or more people out of the building. I've seen nader before and he is one of the reasons I became a lawyer, but Monday night he was not in top form. Instead of good ideas and speaking truth to power his first 15 minutes had a lot of Bush bashing - which can be fun, don't get me wrong. I just want more than bashing from my chosen candidate. Also, I had gone to www.votenader.org and filled out their forms the first day the site was up to volunteer. I never got call. I signed up monday night to help gather the 15,000 now needed. Will they get organized and do a hard drive to get those 15,000. We'll see. In short, Monday's rally was 1/2 hearted and left me dissappointed.

...the Kerry-flavored fascism lovers won the day. Oregon's failure to muster 1000 people for this event has made us an international laughing stock, with hundreds of aticles written about the shortfall, worldwide. I wonder if that pink haired asswipe was GRINGO STARS, or if his Kucinich-bashing, shit-talking self even bothered to show up?

The entertainment was quite loud at times, and I think that did drive some folks away, though they did have the option of going downstairs in the interem. There were some people yelling at one of the bands to 'turn it down'. That was very unappretiative for some musicians that DONATED their time and talents to entertain the crowd. I don't know why any band would volunteer their time in the future to subject themselves to such abuse.

The blonde lounge-style singer was fantastic. She had an amazing voice, and managed to deliver her performance with an edge. At one point, she even spit on the stage, and one of her songs was an imagined homo-erotic conversation between Dick Cheney and Tom Ridge.

All in all, it was embarrassing that Portland didn't make a better showing. It certainly could have been promoted better, but it shouldn't have had to be.

I was there too 07.Apr.2004 10:47

go nader

When I got there at 6:30 there was a line around the corner. There sure seemed to be enough people so I left.

Why on earth were people forced to stand outside in a line for so long? If I could have just gone in I would have stayed. I wonder how many other people did the same.

I'll still vote for Nader.

Fuck Bush and Kerry (his secret society partner in imperialism)

Don't forget that Nader can still get on the ballot with 15,000 signatures.

Either way I hope people vote their conscience and stop believing that a vote for Kerry is a vote for Bush. That is pure nonsense. Most of us who will vote for Nader wouldn't vote at all if Bush and Kerry were the only options.

Oh by the way...Portland was a laughingstock before this and will always be one.

Nader, Don't run in battle ground states!!!!! 07.Apr.2004 10:49

for god sakes

Oregon is a battleground state and Nader could tip the balance. I will not support him this year and I will not sign a petition for him to either. We simply can not afford to have 4 more years of horrible wars and religion extremism, conservative appointees and roll backs on our freedoms. If you think that it is worth the risk I disagree. I get uncomfortable with all the republican support Nader is getting, they are setting him up to help Bush.

(Was happy to see Nader come out for impeachment and would totally support Nader running in non battle ground states like NY, CA TX and such)

Maybe you haven't noticed, but just about all of Bu$hco's plans are currently blowing up in their scowling faces. Bu$hco has zero chance of ever winning a free and fair presidential election against anybody. I will be voting for Nader, whether or not he is on the ballot.

To 'go nader', that is a real tragedy that you had to stand in line in order to preserve your democratic freedom. I hope it didn't put you out too much. Where are you from? If Portland is an irreconsilable laughing stock, why are you here? Seems like a lot of non-natives like to come to Portland to complain about it.

I think it is dangerously presumptive of you to count Bush out. I think you are underestimating the manipulative nature of Bush (bin Ladin in the net another terrorist/anthrax attack), the conservative media, the stupidity of Americans. He may be an idiot but his handlers have shown amazing resolve. Zero chance, sorry but that is a huge exageration or perhaps just fanciful thinking, either way please try to be more politically astute, these are dangerous times. As I said, we can have our cake and eat it to, Nader should not be trying to run in battle ground states period.

ahurrggh ??? ? explain yourself!

"Bu$hco has zero chance of ever winning a free and fair presidential election against anybody."

this is true, to me anyway. so what questionable underhanded means will it be this time? what about that bible belt?

so this nader thing...and what about kucinich? i just figure they should join forces, so to say. do you think that people would turn out to vote if they were running mates?

Re: "for god sakes" 07.Apr.2004 11:44

If you are so frightened that you are willing to vote for a man that has indicated that he will continue to pursue Bu$shco's worst policies, I guess I am not surprised. Bu$hco's main weapons have been fear and ignorance, and now Kerry has commandeered those tactics as well. These policies could very much doom the human race, and inserting Kerry will only diffuse and confuse the opposition.

If you feel so threatened by Nader that you will deny me an opportunity to vote for the candidate that best represents me, maybe you should move to Iraq where you don't have to worry about a non-empire-approved candidate messing things up for you.

I was there 07.Apr.2004 11:45

Jimmy Row

The "blonde lounge-style singer" is Storm of "Storm and the Balls" and she was outstanding.

I agree that the pink haired "heckler" came off as a bit of an ass. He twice beligerently challenged the attempt at fundraising with (paraphrasing) "How much money do you make? and "Why are you asking the working class for money when you are rich?" type questions. His objections were effeectively answered by Nader and the lawyer host guy.

The pink haired guy raised one other question that I thought was much more on target. He asked Nader his opinions on peak oil and sustainability. Nader's response showed he is very weak on Peak Oil. I was very disappointed to see him demonstrate that he does not understand the issue. His response was a tired affirmation that we need alternatives to fossil fuels with reference to solar and wind power.

I was disappointed in the shopping list of issues that Nader raised. They are all good issues and I support them. But, we need more direct focus on the key issue: empire. What we need and what the world as a whole needs is for us to plant the anti-imperial flag solidly here in the belly of the beast. The fuzzy brained liberals who support Kerry because "he is a better than bush" and identify the issue as "anybody but bush" are suckers of the empire. Our goal in the coming capitalist election should be to raise this issue starkly and clearly: for or against the empire. Nader's eclectic list of issues feeds into the liberal confusion by allowing the democrats to say they are a bit better on those issues than the republicans.

What were the organizers thinking??? 07.Apr.2004 12:08

Dean

I came up from Corvallis to participate in the rally and was beyond disappointed. It was billed as a "party" and a "convention" but it was more like a voter registration drive. I think the silence on these boards indicate everyone's disappointment. I think everyone can agree that it was a failure.
If we're going to encourage a new age of government, then we all better get excited and be willing to seriously criticize OURSELVES and then come back better than ever. It is a bit of business wisdom that sez that small enterprizes need to remain flexible and nimble and ever improving; while the big guys receive economy-of-scale savings and a big microphone.
So here goes...
WE NEEDED to do something other than have long lines to get into the Roseland... I don't know if that means more tables for Voter registration if thats where the bottleneck was or just the ticketing or whatever...BUT the Nader Clingers HAVE GOT TO GO. It was a mistake to have them on the immediate inside where traffic flow needed to be clear. I know we must all stay together and all that, but we need focus and that focus is to GET RALPH NADER ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. I'm not volunteering to put political pressure on Kerry to be more left; FUCK HIM!! A Vote for Kerry IS a Vote for Bush!! A Vote for Nader is a Vote for liberty with responsiblity; economic prosperity without discrepancy; democracy with an engaged electorate!!! I am working to get Ralph Nader elected because, in my honest assesment, he is the best candidate. Period.
One can see how easy it is to lose focus. So get rid of the "Phil" candidates (But THANKS PHIL!); get rid of the Clean Energy shills (But THANKS for CARING!); get rid of the UFO'ers (Thanks for the "heads-up") and FOCUS!! More tables staffed with more volunteers with more focus on how to win this campaign. I know the volunteers were available. I feel it was damn-near unforgiveable to make conventioneers wait on stinky Burnside during rushhour while being accosted by those Kerry toadies.
SO LETS talk about the atmosphere at the convention. It was poison. I feel bad being so negative. The door greeters weren't doing their job of informing and directing, so I felt unwelcome and confused. They seemed more interested in the Kerry supporters and the media. Who can blame them? Can we make a quick FAQ sheet or "Welcome! Here's what the fuck is going on..." sheet for the next one?
WHERE WERE the counter-protesters to mitigate the Kerry Fools? A perfect example of one Kerry idiot who sent out an e-mail; gathered posterboard, markers, and sticks; and created a pool of Kerry idiots. That should have been forseeable and effectively countered. Next time I'm recruiting some anachists to chase them to the opposing corner; just kidding. They should have been over there anyway for safety reasons; that corner was ours. Next time I'll take the initiative to rally a posse to help them understand that. An organizer should have called the cops to make them move.
I SHOWED up expecting a party!!! Most of the convention goers had a steely-eyed determination to get Ralph Nader elected; that was not in tune with the event. So what needs to change? Let's save the parties for the rallys. If this was supposed to be a convention then where were the forums to speak? Where were the phone banks? Where was the institutional knowlege that would be shared with future campaigners? Where were the issue tables and forums? Where was the campaign literature? I have experience in the printing industry and it makes me mad that we would waste our resources on glossy multi-colored postcards announcing the event (which were all over the convention- what a waste) and not even a leaflet about the issues. C'mon!
Perhaps we need to engage in a discussion about the level of politics that is acceptable to this campaign. My two-cents is that we either need to commit one way or another. If I never saw a mass-made campaign T-shirt again it would be too soon. I think we need to try using the principles of politics in new ways that minimize cost and accentuate the cerebral nature of this proposed administration. T-shirts ain't it. Glossy Nader posters ain't it. E-mail is where its at. Web pages; blogs; constant updates; list servers. The first journal from my Ralph Nader listserver is some idiot asking him not to run. It is slipping through our fingers. Do I really need to mention Howard Dean? I do to somebody. Where's Ralph today? If he was in my home state then I could rally my network to turn out for him; but who knows?
POLITICAL STRATEGY is not bad. It is a tool. Lets start using it and sharing with the volunteers. OR are most of us resigned to acknowledging the realities of the political environ?
First and foremost, we need to hit John F'in Kerry and his supporters in the balls!(Excuse the gender specific metaphor)I am not so politically naive to think that we aren't racing against two imperialists, not just Bush. But FOR RIGHT NOW we need to show a strong backlash against those FUCKING DEMOCRATIC PUSSIES that WOULD SELL THEIR CHILDRENS' FUTURE and THEIR OWN INTEGRITY for being part of the winning team. You fuckchops vote for Bush everytime you fill up your tank or watch CNN. Your hands won't be washed clean by voting for Kerry.
Nor will the world be a better place without institutional change. My man Ralph Nader understands that.
Bare your fangs the next time someone suggests that Ralph Nader is doing this for any reason other than an altruistic one. People of such low character and esteem for the democratic process deserve scorn; not consideration. NO OTHER CANDIDATE has EVEN CLOSE the record of uncatagorical public service that Ralph Nader has. NOT EVEN CLOSE. I personally don't feel that killing people in an obvious unjust war is much of a public service...especially AFTER the '60's...especially is you profit economically and politically... especially if you're willing to mislead the public into believing you are throwing your own medals overboard...shall I go on?
IT IS EASY to see how anybody could get distracted from the larger picture when there are so many assholes out there with the integrity of slugs.
SO I FORGIVE the event planners that thought that blaring rock or sexy jazz was what would really get people enthusiastic about this political season. What would really get people excited is to present them with a political framework and strategy that would get Ralph Nader elected. I can't enjoy those other things yet. There is too much work to do. Whoopee!! LET'S GO!!

I suggest people read the classics "Art of War" and "Book of Five Rings" for primers for adapting their own personal style of politics to this election. I beleive we are the warriors of clear conscience that will be able to anticipate, counter, and destroy our adversaries. I also suggest that people read "The Prince" by Machiavelli (one of Carl Rove's fav reads) so that they are familiar with the enemies weapons. The main strength of "The Prince" is the effectiveness of the stategies when they aren't countered. The main weakness of "The Prince" is that those strategies are unweildy and just as devastating when turned back from where they came. Think of them as a really sharp heavy sword that the weilder can't fully control. Have Fun!!

You suck 07.Apr.2004 21:37

George Bender

I was there, where were you? It should have been easy to get 1000 people at the convention. But a lot of you, for whatever reason, decided to stay home. So fuck you. You deserve what you'll get from the Democrats and Republicans, which is nothing. You can spend the rest of your miserable lives trying to live on $8-10 per hour, with no one to speak up for you, because you're too lazy and stupid to stand up and fight.

RE: You Suck 07.Apr.2004 22:47

what do you mean

"with no one to speak up for you,"

Won't Mr. Nader continue to speak truth to power even if he isn't on the ballot?

I Agree With George 07.Apr.2004 23:15

also was there

"because you're too lazy and stupid to stand up and fight."

--well George,

unfortunately that pretty much sums up most of the U.S.A.'s population at this point.

the fact that not enough people showed up for this event, I'd blame on promotional efforts  http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/04/285006.shtml#112997 which I already discussed at this link.

to solve the above problems, it's necessary to pierce and puncture the dense corporate media haze which totally veils the average American's eyes and ears.

but to get back to what George mentioned,

this country is totally fucked. (at least, until the American Imperialist regime collapses under the weight of its own graft which might perhaps be sooner than later . . .)

and it's not about 'politics' or Constitutional law, which as everyone reading this knows have both been *badly* flouted especially in the past 5 years or so.

the Corporations - officially and openly - now run all 3 branches of United States government. They also control the electronic voting machines. the olden days of individual legislative politicians standing up for Constitutional principles, the Bill of Rights, and the welfare of American citizens are long gone. not to mention what these Corporations are doing to our natural resources and planetary environment. and we won't even go into what this country has done to Native peoples and enslaved peoples since its inception.

as Ralph said so succinctly the other night: "George W. Bush is a Corporation impersonating a human being."

and it's really about lots more than just GWB personally, or even his Family Mob / Cabal.

might as well get used to the corporate gulag - your "fellow Americans" certainly have.
