Tre Arrow Arrested By FBI

Tre Arrow was apparently taken into custody this morning in Portland(3/15/04) by the FBI.
I just was informed by KEX radio that Tre Arrow was taken into custody today in Portland by the FBI. Whether he is guilty or not he should be supported for the work he has done over the years.

Tre Arrow caught 15.Mar.2004 12:33

GPFX

Any idea how he was caught? Was there a Judas turning him in, an FBI investigation that slowly tracked him down, dumb luck to walk by a cop that recognized him? If anyone finds out, please post here.

The guy is facing some VERY serious charges, and you KNOW they will throw some of those post-9/11 laws at him too. He is going to need something more than a public defender if he wants to get off without a life sentence, so if anyone can find a legal defense fund that is planning to help him, that should be posted here too. I am sure plenty of people here will be willing to go without a coffee to donate a couple bucks to his defense.

What are the charges? 15.Mar.2004 12:35

AA

What evidence does the FBI have against him? I haven't been able to find anything relating to charges except here on Indymedia and it seems like they've go't nothing.

I heard that one of the galleries at the everett street complex in Old Town will change one of their shows to exhibit some Tre Arrow photos from various appearances. No idea which appearances or if they are being sold instead of just shown, but there are a bunch of galleries there that are basically in a square at everett and broadway and it would be in one of those.

Associated Press article 15.Mar.2004 12:43

It should be noted this AP article makes the unsubstantiated claim that Tre 'has had connections with the Earth Liberation Front.' During Tre's public activist life, he never had such alleged connections. Also, the Eagle Creek log truck arson was never claimed by ELF in any sort of public statement. It is irresponsible for the AP to make such a claim as fact, but apparently its true he has been apprehended.

FBI arrests alleged ecoterrorist charged with 2001 arson

The Associated Press
3/15/2004, 11:40 a.m. PT

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) A fugitive radical environmentalist has been arrested by federal officials on charges of setting fire to logging trucks in 2001, the FBI announced Monday.

Michael Scarpitti also known as Tre Arrow was arrested by FBI domestic anti-terrorism agents, the FBI said in a statement.

Further details were not immediately released.

Scarpitti has been on the FBI's most-wanted list since disappearing two years ago.

Scarpitti is among four activists charged with setting logging trucks on fire in a 2001 protest of the Eagle Creek timber sale on the slopes of Mount Hood.

Three others were captured after one of them told a girlfriend about the crime, according to arrest papers. The girlfriend's father is a deputy state fire marshal.

Scarpitti has had connections with the Earth Liberation Front, a loose group of activists that the FBI has classified as an eco-terrorist group.

The FBI lists the ELF as its No. 1 domestic terrorism priority.

Too bad 15.Mar.2004 13:06

I guess if a tree I was sitting on was chopped down from underneath me, I might set fire to a logging truck myself.

As usual, the public will be given an incomplete & distorted story, predigested so they absorb it. And the public will believe all they're told. Bunch of fucked-up idiots.

Serious concerns 15.Mar.2004 13:40

Not buying it

I heard this news on NPR a short time ago, and came here for the rest of the story, as there was little information on NPR. It seems that info on where, and how the arrest took place is nowhere to be found. It may be accurate, or it may be a ploy. This strikes me as suspicious, to say the least. This may be a trap. Perhaps he was arrested, or perhaps the JTTF is simply waiting for one of the many people they are probably surveiling right now to attempt to contact Tre or someone connected with him, to see if he was really arrested. Hopefully, no one will fall for it if this is such a trap.

(And may I just say, I'm disheartened to note that Craig Rosebraugh learned of this on [GASP!] KEX, of all places. Say it ain't so.)

Michael Scarpitti has been on the FBI's most-wanted list since disappearing two years ago. He is among four activists charged with setting fire to trucks using incendiary devices. The arson was in protest of a timber sale on the slopes of Mount Hood.

Three others were captured after one of them told a girlfriend about the crime, according to arrest papers. The girlfriend's father is a deputy state fire marshal.

Scarpitti, also known as Tre Arrow, had a $25,000 reward on his head.

The FBI wanted poster said "he is known to be affiliated with the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), which is a loosely organized movement whose stated objective is to stop the destruction of the natural environment and the exploitation of the earth's natural resources through whatever means are necessary."

The FBI lists ELF as its No. 1 domestic terrorism priority. In recent years, dozens of attacks across the country especially on SUV dealerships, construction sites and test plots of genetically modified crops have been made in ELF's name.

Accused Eco-Terrorist, Most-Wanted Fugitive Captured

Suspect Allegedly Caught Shoplifting

VICTORIA, British Columbia -- A Northwest fugitive was captured in Canada.
Accused eco-terrorist Michael Scarpitti, known as Tre Arrow, was on the FBI's most-wanted list, charged in a June 2001 arson of Estacada, Ore., logging trucks.

The FBI said Scarpitti also started fires at Ross Island Sand and Gravel in April 2001, causing $200,000 in damage.

The activist is well known in Portland for scaling a downtown building housing U.S. Forest Service offices and living for several days on the ledge. He has worked to stop logging operations and ran unsuccessfully for Congress.

Scarpitti has had connections with the Earth Liberation Front, a loose group of activists that the FBI has classified as an eco-terrorist group and lists as its No. 1 domestic terrorism priority.

Scarpitti was arrested Saturday in Victoria after allegedly trying to shoplift from a hardware store. Victoria police contacted Canadian immigration officials, who used fingerprints to tie him to the FBI's most-wanted list.

The FBI and members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force planned to release more information at a 2:30 p.m. news conference Monday.

RCMP arrest one of FBI's Most Wanted
With reporting by Hudson Mack

Monday, March 15, 2004

Michael James Scarpitti, who goes by the alias "Tre Arrow," was arrested in Victoria on a shoplifting charge. Scarpitti is on the United States' FBI Most Wanted list.

Victoria police believe they have arrested an alleged eco-terrorist on the FBI Most Wanted list.

Michael James Scarpitti, who uses the alias Tre Arrow, was arrested Saturday at a Canadian Tire on a shoplifting charge.

Police say the 30-year-old American was identified by his fingerprints, which were sent to immigration officials and to the FBI.

In Victoria, Scarpitti is charged with theft, assault and obstructing a peace officer. He remains in custody.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to Scarpitti's arrest. It isn't clear whether the Canadian Tire security guard who brought Scarpitti to police will get the reward.

Scarpitti is wanted on several charges in Oregon, but Canada Immigration officials say the Victoria charges will be dealt with before anything is done to extradite Scarpitti to the United States.

Scarpitti is wanted by the FBI for allegedly setting a fire at a sand and gravel company in Portland, Oregon in 2001. Three concrete mixing trucks were damaged by the fire.

Scarpitti was also allegedly involved in an arson at a logging company in Oregon in 2001. Two logging trucks and a front-loader were damaged in the incident.

The FBI Most Wanted website says Scarpitti is "a longtime environmental activist with an extensive history of involvement in anti-logging tree sits and other related protests" and is affiliated with the Earth Liberation Front.

The objective of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) is to stop the destruction of nature and stop the exploitation of natural resources "through whatever means necessary." ELF is considered a terrorist group.

The Federal Blunder Institute let 9/11 happen, so now they crack down on everybody to try to look good again. After decades of corruption under the transgendered J. Edgar Hoover, and continued corruption in the 1970's, the Blunderers continue their rampage trodding the Constitution under foot. And of course, they had no idea where Tre was, since it was the Mouties who captured him! So it looks like they were just standing around twiddling their thumbs when the usually hapless C-cops (the ones who let so many terrorists live on the dole in their fine frozen provinces) called. thanks to rosebraugh for the initial post. man, some people are stupid- don't you think kex was letting him know about tre to get a comment from the former "spokesman"? I find it unlikely that he listens to kex for fun, because they seem to slader him on a regular basis.

Also on the point of "stop tearing our own people down", what can we do for tre? Perhaps the best thing would be to start a very pervasive media campaign RIGHT NOW, however you can, be it guerilla or straight up news. Everyone in this city needs to know that the cops and feds serve and protect the money, not life. Poeple need to be reminded that this feeding frenzy on Tre is nothing more than scapegoating one man for the insecurities of this nation, and that these environmental and political insecurities are CASUED by the corporate and political interests that are now about to try to lock Tre up forever.

Maybe we should start getting money together. If you have your priorities straight, why not raise 10 for him right now, and put it aside to give to the defense committee as soon as it exists?

Also on the issue of "stop tearing our own people down", why don't we address the real SECURITY problems assosciated with the lack of support for direct action? I mean, look at the fact that two ELF actions have been pinned in the last two week, as large result of snitches and subsquent snitching-once-removed.

It's not too late- things are just begging. Summer of fire last year, summer of fire this year, and it doesn't stop till we get full freedom!

Maybe if we saved our dough we could offer some money for the arrest of the real ecoterrorists, huh? Like for instance...GW Bush, Roseburg Forest Products, Peabody coal, Standard Oil, blahblahblahblah. And if we want to prosecute theives, lets start out with Credit card companies, corporate welfare recipients, Enron, or the rest of the corporate crooks that run this world. A few trucks and this guy goes down...$25,000...bolt cutters? Is our government so starved for attention that they resort to offering a bounty on a guy who has burned a couple of trucks? The interesting thing about all of this is that Tre was a regular guy with a set of big ones. Within each of us lies the capacity to start some serious shit. They can't throw us all in jail. It's all starting to come together, and it will NOT be televised.

Continuing Irony 15.Mar.2004 17:04

CatWoman

So while a treasonous murderer with connections to the world's biggest terrorist organization stuffs pretzels in his face in the whitehouse, the FBI is patting themselves on the back for having captured (by proxy no less) a man who has dedicated himself to saving the last remaining forests from the corporate ax. Good job.

Incidentally, the transparent title of "eco-terrorist" was simply a piece of the groundwork laid down to attack people like tre (along with the patriot act, the demonization of environmental activists in the corpporate media, and the many laws bought by the eco-destruction industries). As it happens, the resistance is working. It's a slow and bloody battle, but we're RIGHT. And we know we're right. That makes us stronger than those who would throw us all in dungeons while they converted the life of the planet into dollar signs.

The fact that tre has been sought with such a vengeance is simply proof that they know it too. Keep strong. Resist.

Write a letter to the Oregonian. Yes, really! 15.Mar.2004 18:52

q

Whatever you may think of the Oregonian, it *is* the "paper of record" for a huge part of the Pacific Northwest, and the way something like this is reported in it has an effect. Yes, they're going to trash Tre and call him a terrorist and all the rest of the bullshit. But if they get 100 letters just like I've seen here above, pointing out that the FBI is largely just trying to make itself look good post 9-11, etc. (and what the hell is this about ELF being their "no. 1 domestic terrorist concern"??? ELF didn't blow up the Oklahoma City Federal Building, ELF isn't shooting down innocent kids in schools or in drug-infested neighborhoods...).

The newspapers count the letters they receive. If they get 100 saying "good riddance" and "stupid hippy shoplifter", and 20 saying "what about the REAL terrorists?", it'll be reflected in the Letters page.

Write them right now. Write ANYTHING - just a paragraph. But do it -- it does make a difference.

ok, so now Tre is caught. these things happen. we tend to have a growing number of our people getting caught and sent to prison for long periods of time. Now is the time to be responsible. If you have ever advocated ELF type actions or printed communiques etc, you really need to step up and support Tre Arrow. It isnt enough to be a cheerleader and then do nothing when people get busted. This critique is directed at anyone that has advocated property destruction but particularly the Eugene crew who through their magazines and publications adovcate the destruction of civilization and property destruction (GA, Black Clad Messenger, Disorderly Conduct etc etc etc). this isnt a critque about these views-its just a reminder that there is another side to this situation-supporting the prisoners that get caught.

Frontiers Applauds Arrest of Most Wanted Eco-Terrorist

3/15/2004 5:47:00 PM

To: National Desk and Environmental Reporter

Contact: Jason Wright of the Frontiers of Freedom, 703-246-0110 or  press@ff.org

FAIRFAX, Va., March 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Frontiers of Freedom today applauded the efforts of the FBI in arresting fugitive radical environmentalist, Michael Scarpitti. Scarpitti had been on the FBI's most wanted list since 2001, when he set fires to several logging trucks. The violence was in protest of a timber sale on Mount Hood, Oregon.

Scarpitti, a.k.a. "Tre Arrow," has connections with the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), a group of activists classified as an eco-terrorist group by the FBI and under constant scrutiny for the last several years. ELF is the FBI's top domestic terrorism priority.

"On behalf of our thousands of members nationwide, we applaud the FBI for the capture of this terrorist," said George Landrith, president of Frontiers of Freedom. "May this be just the first of many of important arrests in the global war against terrorism. Make no mistake, eco-terrorism may not make the CBS Nightly News as often as Al Qaeda, but the lines between the two brands of extremism are blurred."

Frontiers has long held that groups like ELF, the Animal Liberation League (ALF), EarthFirst, and the Rainforest Action League should be treated as sisters of Al Qaeda, Hamas, and other well-known terrorists groups around the world.

"ELF, ALF, and Al Qaeda terrorists share important qualities," said Frontiers' vice president Jason Wright. First, they are loosely organized to avoid capture and law enforcement. They communicate through quiet channels of email and Internet chat rooms and meet in seedy all night cafes. They take credit, generally, for their acts of terrorism. Second, their goal is to terrorize and strike fear in the hearts of their enemies, real or perceived. They relish their abilities to strike any target, anywhere, at any time. Finally, they place great emphasis on the economic damage their mercenaries inflict. The collapse of the two towers on 9/11 may have been hoped for, but was likely unexpected. They are numb to killing; their greatest pride came from the multi-billion dollar losses sustained by the financial capitol of the world."

"For Al Qaeda," Wright concluded, "It's all of America and her allies, for groups like ELF, it's the business community and the job creators. But beneath it all there is shocking little difference between the two. Let's treat them all for what they are -- and for what they profess to be -- terrorists."

For gosh sake, if you are a fugitve don't shoplift and have a decent cover story. According to the papers, Tre told the authorities he was from Canada, but couldn't say where he was born or who his parents were.

I don't want to rag on Tre. I admire him, but there are some lessons here.

"Tre Arrow shone when he sang..." 17.Mar.2004 22:04

Free Tre Arrow!

I exchange email with someone in Victoria. This person talks about what Tre Arrow had been doing before the arrest and why he might have needed the bolt-cutters. I didn't ask for their permission to post this here. Hope they don't mind. I cut some parts off to protect their identity and privacy. I don't live in North America but let's make this as an internationally recognized case to set Tre Arrow free. The rulers in the US seem to enjoy labeling any freedom fighter (earth defender in Tre Arrow's case) "terrorist" and lock her/him up like Mumia. Would you like us to send troops and drop bombs to establish "freedom and democracy" in the States? Unchallenged life is not worth living, folks!

Here we go...

Events of the last few days have been somewhat unsettling..................One of the most alluring members (((of the band))) was this guy who had been living with
them for about 2 weeks. he slept mostly outside, in their back yard under
the stars, and dumpster-dived for his food. He had this calm and peace
even
mystery around him, and his songs were deep, intriging and showed great
sensitivity toward the earth, he shone when he sang. He was most helpful
with me.......(((Tre Arrow was helping to organize the upcoming anti-occupation peace rally there)))
About 6 days ago he disappeared mysteriously.
After a few days, the house had a call from the local police, and they
asked
if they knew Josh. They said "yes", and the police asked if they knew his
last name. They didn't. The police told them that he had been in a bicycle
accident with a car and was at the hospital and would be transferred to
police custody. They wouldn't give any other information.
They waited for days, worrying, with no way of locating him. Without a last
name, you can't do anything. Then the other day, this appeared on the front
page of the local newspaper:

 link to www.canada.com

As you can imagine everyone was blown away. They've made him out to be a
brutal wanted terrorist, on basically the same level as terrorists who blow
up buildings filled with people. In oregon he's like a folk legend who
fights for the protection and preservation of the environment..........

he was likely lifting the bolt-cutters to get into the locked trash bins
for
food. If and when he is sent back to the states, he will probabbly face
very serious consequences.........He'll be missed.
