Mt. Hood logging Season Begins at Hipo and East Fivemile!

Mt. Hood logging Season Begins at Hipo and East Fivemile! Help us bear witness to old growth logging on Mt. Hood.

East Five Mile
Bark learned within the last week that the Forest Service began the 2004 logging season on Mt. Hood early this year, obtaining controversial winter logging waivers on both the Hipo and East Fivemile timber sales. Both are old-growth sales. Hipo is home to some of the most ancient Western hemlock trees in Oregon, and logging at East Fivemile will result in a "take" (i.e., killing) of three Northern spotted owls, despite their status as an Endangered Species. It's important to contact our elected officials and let them know that logging old growth, when less than 5% remains in the United States, is totally unacceptable. Please call Senator Wyden's office (503) 326-7525 and ask what Senator Wyden is doing to stop the loss of this precious heritage. Bark will be organizing a field trip to the area soon to bear witness to the devastation within the coming days. Please contact us if you are interested in attending. I am still confused of how "logging at East Fivemile will result in a "take" (i.e., killing) of three Northern spotted owls". My confusion is that owls fly. Perhaps these three owls are taped to trees, then certianly they are doomed, but I fail to accept that as a possibility. If this statement is crediable then could someone enlighten me. If their is no defence for this statement then truly it is slander and a detriment to your cause.
