The John Kerry Experience

"I Never Sail on Anything Less Than 135 Feet"
CounterPunch
March 4, 2004

I would like to add my two cents about my John Kerry experience.

During my career as an Air Force pilot, I spent two years flying a small twin-engine prop plane around the Pacific from my base in Okinawa, Japan. On one trip we had to fly Senator Kerry, his congressional aide, and a Navy Captain (Vietnam, A-4 fighter pilot) was also in Kerry's party to various locations in Vietnam and Cambodia as part of the MIA/POW talks.

When I met him, he was wearing a shirt with a picture of his sailboat on it. I told him I had a small 27 feet sailboat in Okinawa, he remarked 'Oh I never sail on anything less than 135 feet'.

When we first flew him into Phnom Penh, he went to the back of the airplane and grabbed the pizza that was put aside for the crew and passed it around to his staff. He was never offered any pizza because they were supposed to have lunch with the Cambodian government once we landed. The pizza would have been our only meal that day.

Then when we picked him up in Cambodia, he was an hour late getting to the airport. We could not start the engines and therefore the air conditioning until he arrived. Phnom Penh at that time was over 100 degrees with 95% humidity and we were basically sitting in a greenhouse behind the cockpit windows.

When he finally did arrive, we were wringing out our clothes from the perspiration. He walks out of the air conditioned car, into the airplane and asks us 'Could you guys get the air conditioning running, I'm a little warm." The other pilot had to physically restrain me from going back there and picking a fight.

Then we took him into Noi Bai airfield in Hanoi. After we picked him up the next day (he stayed the night in Vietnam, we stayed in Bangkok) we taxied out, ran up the engines for takeoff, and noticed that our prop rpm was vibrating all over the place. We taxied off to the side to look at it, but there was a good possibility that there was an engine malfunction and the engine may fail if we took off with it.

Well, Mr. Senator sticks his head up in the cockpit and says 'this plane WILL take off, I have a press conference in Bangkok in three hours!" (Maybe this is an indication of how he will run the FAA). We ran the engines again, and did not have the problem, so we took off and made it back.

During the flight, he told everyone how he had taken a Cessna (a small General aviation plane) up with a fighter pilot, and the fighter pilot remarked that Kerry was one of the best pilots he had ever seen. I don't know about other pilots out there, but it's hard to imagine a little, single-engine prop plane pilot being able to show the 'right stuff'.

After Kerry left the plane, the Navy Captain came up to us, apologized and said basically that he knows Kerry is a jerk and that we should be glad we don't have to deal with him every day....

Or will we?

Who is Hal Cranmer? 12.Mar.2004 21:39

meemaJ Cunningham3651@aol.com

This article says you can contact Hal Cranmer at studioron@verizon. Actually, you cannot. This address belongs to a Ron Harold, who sends a copy of an email he sent to someone else explaining how his e-mail addy got posted. He vouches for Hal Cranmer but gives no direct link or other means of proving that the guy really wrote the article, or that what was said was actually true. I don't care one way or the other, but this is one of those things that just can't get tracked down to the stated author. Anyone else have a problem with this?

Who ate my pizza? 13.Mar.2004 00:35

JProvo

So Kerry ate his pizza, eh? Maybe Kerry thought it was meant for him and his guests? Still it was rude of him not to ask.

But Bush lied his ass off to get the US into a war that has killed over 500 Americans and thousands of Iraqis. Now that's REALLY rude.

Why didn't the "anonymous" writer have the courage to put his name on this pitiful, whiny nonsense? If you mke accusations you have to be accountable. We're going to see a lot more of this nonsense as the Bush propaganda team gears up.

I'm putting my name on this. If you still want some pizza, you anonymous a-hole, I'll send you some if you identify yourself.

I don't have a problem with this 15.Mar.2004 14:58

I don't have a problem with this story at all because it's the same story Hal told me about 12 years ago. I was stationed in Okinawa the same time as Hal and we worked in the same building. One day we were talking and I asked him what trips he'd been on lately and he told me the above story. I remembered it because I'm from Massachusetts originally and I thought it was pretty low rent to steal the crews lunch, not ask for it or even offer to pay for it. Pretty cheap on the part of Kerry.

contact info for Hal Cranmer. 22.Mar.2004 13:10

Hal Cranmer (originator of this story?) is a commercial pilot in New Hampshire that, as far as I can research, can be reached via email at:  hcranmer@hotmail.com. I have not personally attempted to contact --- YET.

The email I received with this story had the following contact information regarding the story:

Jack Privett
Hpe Computer Specialists Inc
5314 Mac Arthur Drive
North Little Rock, AR 72118

I verified the company DOES exist at this address and their phone number is: (501) 812-9900. I have not confirmed that a Jack Privett works there, but did find a listing of him in Mammoth Spring, AR and an obituary that places him in Little Rock 7-4-2001.

If anyone else would like to do some sleuthing on this and post, I would LOVE to see the results!!! I have to get back to my REAL job now ;}.

Kerry Ate Air Force Pizza? 04.Jun.2004 15:38

We may never know if these events occured exactly as relayed by Hal Cranmer. They might have, or they may have been misinterpreted, exaggerated, or just plain made up. My point is not to take a side in this...maybe Kerry is a jerk...maybe Cranmer is part of a smear campaign...I don't know. What I do know, from my time in the Air Force, is that air crews and other air force personnel are typically provided box lunches (ah, yes...memories of those mystery-meat sandwiches, brown speckled bananas, and lukewarm milk) or MRE type flight meals when they are travelling on military craft or would otherwise be away from normal dining facilities. Pizza was the only meal provided to the air crew? I may be wrong...but I never heard of pizza being provided instead of a box lunch...unless the air crew picked it up themselves and did not request their normal meal. In that case, the pizza would have been personal property and the aircrew would have been well within their rights to challenge ANY party (regardless of rank or title...but using the appropriate amount of tact) that reached for the pizza. Also, there are devices called APU's (Auxillary Power Units) that can be hooked up to aircraft when they sit on a tarmac to run stuff like the air conditioner when the main engines cannot be run up to provide primary power. Lacking an APU, protocol only requires the crew to stay WITH the plane, not inside it, while awaiting the return of their passengers. Also, in peace time, the aircraft commander has FINAL say on the operation of the craft and cannot be overridden by a "high ranking" passenger...EVER...especially when a safety issue is involved. Just thought I would point out some things I see as inconsistancies with the "information" provided.
