sunday hike to Coquille Timber Sale

Sunday, February 29: Hike to the East Fork Coquille timber sale. Located in the headwaters of East Fork Coquille River west of Roseburg, this sale would clearcut over 600 acres of trees 5-8 feet in diameter. "The density of huge trees per acre slated to be logged here is like nothing we've seen before. I hope the Coos Bay BLM got coal in their stocking for this one," says Meera Subramanian of the CWP. CWP volunteers have been finding loads of red tree vole nests at this sale and hope to see it canceled. We will leave at 9:00 am.

1/27/04 Legacy Forests Campaign Update

Some talking points/background on the Biscuit proposal:

--The preferred alternative would log over 500 million board feet of forest (enough to fill log trucks lined up from LA to Canada).
--we support projects based on science, not what campaign contributions can buy
--the industry put over $1 million in Bush's pocket during the last election
--no logging in Roadless Areas or on steep slopes (the area is too fragile)
--clearcutting the Siskiyou wild Rivers Area will harm the economic stability of the region

* Hikes to the Clark Burn at Fall Creek and East Fork Coquille

Sunday hikes are a great way to see old-growth timber sales that we are working to cancel. Seeing them yourself is key in getting involved in the effort to end old-growth logging here in Cascadia. Hikes leave the Growers Market (454 Willamette St.). Bring water, raingear, lunch and hiking boots. Hikes are typically off trail.
