Francesconi Shows True Colors: Black, Green and White

Local despot and mayoral candidate Jim Francesconi showed where his sympathy and positions lie on the current Starbucks development during todays city council hearing. After testifying before city council about the growing lack of affordable commercial and residential property in Inner Southeast Portland, currently being exasperated by the new Starbucks development on SE 20th and Division St, it was brought to my attention that Lord francesconi had been enjoying a cup of coffee from the predatory chain the whole time. Whether this was a blaitant "FUCK YOU" to concerned citizens or just blind consumerism is hard to tell. Most likely it was a mixture of the two.

This is a strange message to be sending to the public from someone involved in a high profile mayoral race. Granted, it is doubtful that Francesconi is relying much on the votes of those vocally opposed to the new Starbucks sight after continually showing himself to be in the pocket of the Portland Business Alliance. Nonetheless, sending such an obvious message of disregard should be unsettling to any Portland resident, whether they support his campaign or not.

Am I suprised by any of this? NO! This action is beside the point since the council put a deaf ear to my concerns anyway. Apparently they still hadn't taken the cotton out of their ears from those giving testimony previous to myself on the still unaddressed criminal behavior of the Portland police towards community activists demonstrating their rights to free speech and public dissent. All this is very typical of our public officials who have bought their way into political office at the expense of the general public, and plan to keep it that way.

starbucks is omnipresent 18.Feb.2004 15:14

...

like every other geographical point in the city of portland (and many other places in america), the door of city hall is about 45 steps from the nearest starbucks. there used to be a non-starbucks coffee shop on the first floor of city hall, but they closed down a few months ago due to lack of sufficient profits. now all the bureaucrats and lawyers and visitors to city hall head out the 5th avenue door to scoop up their multiple caffeine fixes for the day. i would at least hope francesconi is drinking 'fair trade' coffee, but somehow i get the feeling he's not...

Responsible Portland Voter

Just look at how all the big businesses like Quest and PGE are lining up behind Francesconi with big campaign contributions. While I don't like the idea of a burned-out, ex-cop as mayor, Potter must be preferable to Francesconi. I would like to support the Green candidate, but Posey is a fat slouch with all the appeal of Don King promoting another comeback from Mike Tyson. God (or Goddess) help us!

Starbucks? big deal 09.Apr.2004 07:00

Pinky

I can understand the concerns brought about by Francesconi's contributions from PGE and Qwest, but give me a break. He had a cup of coffee
at Starbucks? I'm sure if you dig for that one in anyone's past, it'll come up, no doubt. Maybe he doesn't have the exquisite social conscience to seek out the local café (which I haven't found too many of) or isn't troubled by a company with good marketing skills which people seem to regard as the most evil blight on the planet. There are many blights much worse.
