For the love of monkeys… and reliable research

Please join the Coalition to Abolish Animal Testing and In Defense of Animals this Sunday
Please join the Coalition to Abolish Animal Testing and In Defense of Animals this Sunday to spread some love for the animals in OHSU's labs. We'll be meeting at the IDA office and then teaming up to hang door hangers in Northeast Portland to educate the public about how their tax dollars are being wasted on unreliable, cruel research on animals.

Where: In Defense of Animals

hideous 14.Feb.2004 13:42

monkeywatcher

After watching troops of these monkeys in the rainforest moving among the treetops feeding as they go, how hideous to see this picture now. With the populations of all primate species rapidly dwindling worldwide except man I am even more saddened. Go see them in the wild before its too late.

Hey monkeywatcher--it is hideous, but 14.Feb.2004 14:23

:(

the ones in which they're locked alone in 2x2 foot cages for their entire lives (can be 60 +/- years), and taken out only to be pumped full of toxic chemicals or have their penises eloctrocuted (to get sperm) are even more disgusting. They suffer horribly, go crazy from boredom, pain, and isolation, pull their fur off and create gaping wounds in their bodies. All for junk science perpetuated by grant-hungry OHSU. Help us shut down the primate center, and spread the word!

In me the scientist
Always get stuck on always trying this
I try to live on science alone
Analysis and freaky sensitivity
We've gotta live on science alone
I got it Woohoowoo
Yeah uh I am a scientist
Woohoowoo
Yeah uh I am a scientist
Woohoowoo
Yeah uh I am a scientist
Woohoowoo
We've gotta live on science alone
Religiously I'm speaking on the science 'cause
We've gotta live on science alone
I tell you what mathematically I'm having it
I want to live on science alone
Woohoowoo
Yeah uh I am a scientist

Save a monkey, use an HLS customer! 14.Feb.2004 17:01

How about experimenting on vivisectors instead of on monkeys! The trade in monkeys kidnapped from Africa has an odius precedent in the African slave trade and the Middle Passage.

monkeys can't spread seeds 16.Feb.2004 08:49

while locked in cages

removing primates from the rainforest (la selva) decreases the spread of genetic diversity of many plants. When monkeys eat fruits and seeds, they travel through the canopy and eventually poop the seeds out in a different location. The fruit plant is specifically dependent on the monkey for seed dispersal, that is the reason fruits taste so sweet, they want to be eaten by monkeys. When the monkeys are removed from the rainforest by pharmaceutical/animal research hired poachers, they cannot perform their natural role as seed dispersers and the dependent plants do not travel very far..

Ironically, these are some of the same medicinal plants that the petrochemically derived pharmaceutical corporations are attempting to biopatent their DNA 4 new pharmaceuticals..

this doesn't address the issue of animal cruelty or the pain and depression suffered by the monkey once incarcerated by the animal research corporation. Animal researchers who feel superior to monkeys are operating on a premise that the monkey's feelings either 1) don't matter or 2) don't exist. We need to strike down the latter option because we know that they feel pain, all mammals have nerve cells that warn the body of danger by triggering pain. This saves the animal from dangerous situations in the rainforest, but should not be applied in a controlled setting for long periods. This is instead torture. Scientists and animal researchers have the basic understanding of the nervous system so they are very much aware of the pain suffered by the monkeys. We then are left with the first option, the monkey's feelings and reaction to pain don't matter in the eyes of the animal researchers..

Corporate science in the form of animal research is driven by money and the profit driven petrochemically derived pharmaceutical industry that claims to make people better by giving them pharmaceutical products. there is no evidence 4 their claim, only hired statisticians who can manipulate data to make pharma corps look effective..

We don't know the ability of the human mind/spirit to heal the body without pharma products, and won't as long as the pharma industry dominates debate with petrochemical profits silencing dissent..

meanwhile another monkey at OHSU/UCDavis/HLS cringes in it cage waiting in fear for the corporate scientist to strap the monkey down and stick a petrochemical needle in its penis..

ouch..

yes, we feel pain..

I really wish your efforts didn't make us and our ideas look silly. I wish they were lent the presence of strategy. I wish our lifestyle wasn't the message, and wasn't put before change.

We're not going to end vivesection by making america vegeterian.
Please.
