ELF DAMAGES CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT AT CHARLOTTESVILLE SITE

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINA - The Earth Liberation Front has taken credit for its second known action of 2004 with an attack on equipment at a building site in Charlottesville, Virginia. The site, a 30-acre clearcut slated for the development of 300 duplex-apartment units, a bank, a Target store and some restaurants, was targeted as part of the ELF's ongoing actions against large-scale developments going up at the expense of what little green space is left in North America.

According to an anonymous email received by the ELF Press Office, on Saturday, February 7th members of the ELF attended the site, set one bulldozer on fire, and caused minor damage (broken windows and cut wires) to several other pieces of construction equipment. A banner reading "YOUR CONTRUCTION = LONG TERM DESTRUCTION - ELF" was left at the scene.

Damage estimates for this action are not known at this time.

The Earth Liberation Front is an international underground organization that uses direct action in the form of economic sabotage to stop the destruction of the natural environment. Since 1997, the ELF in North America has caused over $100 million in damages to entities who profit from the destruction of life and the planet.

The Earth Liberation Front Press Office is an autonomous entity that serves to publicize news and actions of the ELF, as reported through news media or by anonymous communications from the individuals involved in activities.

and now for some statistics:

every day, 20 billion more gallons are drawn from north american aquafers than are replaced by rainfall

globally, 25 billion tons of topsiol blow away every year

human world population is rising by 90 million people per year

the largest 1,000 (out of 11 million total) businesses account for over 60 percent of the GNP

every day the worldwide economy burns an amount of energy that the planet required 10,000 days to create.

In the next fourty years, humans will use 80 percent of the primary production of the planet (all energy stored in all forms, including all plants)

in the past 20 years 296 million acres of forests have been razed.

the rate of extinction now is 1,000 to 10,000 time greater than the "background" levels of extinction that have existed for the past 65 million years. We are killing approximately 27,000 species a year. (one every twenty minutes).

every american consumes about 37 pounds of resources a week, while over 2,000 pounds of industrial/production wastes are discarded to support this consumption.

If they're going to put a price on life, we've got to make it a lot higher. TImes like these have never existed before, in the history of the planet.

Thanks to those who take action to defend the earth. Hopefully one day the sparks will grow into a flame.

Nature will eventually catch up with you. There's no global warming because the ice-caps are absorbing the extra heat. Research the physics of melting ice - Write to Idso, though he'll dismiss this. That's why there's no Co2 / global warming evidence. By 2500 Co2 might be around 3000ppm and oxygen below 15%, with very little ice. Bush want's to find ice on Mars with as much passion as he wants to find WMD's in Iraq, but the odds are low. Scientists will deflect your insights and ridicule their own inferences which they will impute to you. The young must be shown the arrogance of science.

It takes a special mind - well balanced and in service to others instead of to self - to reach a life of action against the world's greatest evil empire. To do this in these times is even more admirable - THESE ARE THE NEW AMERICAN HEROES!!! THANK YOU FOR A ROLE MODEL WE CAN ALL LIVE WITH!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!1

I find the actions of ELF to be incredibly dispicable. I want to see a stop to massive sprawl and uncontrolled development just like many others, but this is not the right way to do this. Does anyone really think that this sort of action will cause the people who are having homes built in this area to think twice about the impact of their behaviour? Most probably this will cause the opposite effect and make them see anyone that is interested in saving the environment as a militant that is out to get them. If you want to change the world, go provide an example for others instead of destroying other people's lives. Go build an ecocummunity, plant a permaculture garden, educate people on the environmental impact of mass-produced meat. Do something positive that might actually get people to thinkg instead of destroying things. What is probably ironic is that these ELF members who think they are doing something great
are actually just creating more waste. For every piece of equipment the destroy, a _new one has to be built_, thus using more natural resources. Get a clue and start thinking about the big picture instead of your little fucking corner of the world.

education is important 11.Feb.2004 14:36

and we must start with ourselves

"a _new one has to be built_, thus using more natural resources"

This is incorrect; the equipment has already been built, and the resources used. This is the nature of a surplus economy. Corporations do not produce goods as they are needed; they produce a surplus and store that surplus away from people.

"Go build an ecocummunity, plant a permaculture garden, educate people on the environmental impact of mass-produced meat. Do something positive that might actually get people to thinkg instead of destroying things. What is probably ironic is that these ELF members who think they are doing something great."

Well, a diversity of tactics is important and I would always choose to spend my energy in creation not in destruction. However, from a historical perspective criminal acts including property destruction have been a part of every successful movement. And when we look back, who do we admire, those at the Boston Tea Party and the Underground Railroad (for 2 examples people are most familiar with). The people who engaged in these actions are considered heroes and patriots for engaging in property destruction and theft. If we believe that the circle of rights will continue to expand and our understanding of our place in the world comes into focus, then there's no reason to suspect that the ELF and ALF will be looked upon any differently.

ugh 12.Feb.2004 02:15

clamydia

The ELF is outdated. It was an interesting idea at first: Create an underground organization that consists of spontaneous, independent cells known only to themselves and possibly the people to whom they blab, and label every act of sabotage towards non-environmentally-friendly corpwhores as an ELF action, so long as it didn't endanger lives or the environment. Guess what: It's not working. Why? Because most progressive people are too caught up in making real change to risk their freedom on gestures.

just a thought..... 12.Feb.2004 11:53

john smith

the elf is a terrorist organization just like the terrorist of 9-11, and should be dealt with the same. vandalism is not the way to get your message across. breaking the law doesnt make people turn towards your cause. also an earlier post wrote that " It takes a special mind - well balanced and in service to others instead of to self - to reach a life of action against the world's greatest evil empire."
the world's greatest evil empire? meaning, the U.S.A.? then why, if this country is so evil, do you stay? go somewhere that isn't evil. go somewhere where you have more rights than here. but wait, you can't. cause there is no nation like this one. this is the most free country in the world. with the most rights afforded to its citizens.

but if this country is so evil, and they attempt to distinguish your voices, resulting in terrorist activity against businesses, then why do they allow a website like this to continue having such anti-american postings? just a thought......

john smith, how are they the same? 12.Feb.2004 12:59

meow

last time i checked, the ELF never killed anyone. In fact they've probably saved many animals' lives (by saving their habitat).

insurance payoff 12.Feb.2004 18:31

hypothetical scenario

just suppose..

under the new "Patriot Act" anti-terrorism laws, are corporations victimized by eco-terrorists entitled to hefty insurance paybacks funded by tax dollars?

the "war on terrorism" comes in many different forms, not only are Arab/Muslims prime suspects, now environmentalists are suspect also. How nice for the corporations who want to continue plundering the Earth to have environmentalists demonized as "eco-terrorists"..

call me a conspiracy wingnit, but some of this ELF stuff seems too good to be true..

does mainsteam America respond to "ecoterrorism" by purchasing more SUVs out of sympathy for the victim, something they may not have done ordinarily because of fueling expense?

did anyone notice how many "gifts" (off the record) the "vandalized" SUV dealership in West Covina got from sympathetic Republican supporters?

and local vegan bike activists got their homes raided by FBI at 4 am while being forced to stand outside in their underwear..

1933 Reichstag fire in Nazi Germany was blamed on German Communists (Kommunist Partei Deutschland) before the Nazi's outlawed KPD and took over, 9/11 blamed on Arab/Muslims who could be in either Afganistan/Iraq, nice that Halliburton just happens to be taking oil from Iraq after the invasion, SUVs vandalized by "eco-terrorists", resulting in more surviellence of ANY environmental activists and also plenty of gifts and insurance payoffs for the business that got vandalized..

..would it be easier to dismiss this as the ramblings of a enviro-wacko wingnit?

That's right Meow 12.Feb.2004 23:03

On top of that they are working to save human lives by protecting the ecosystems that support human life. WIthout protection our habitat will bacome so degraded that the planet's ability to support life, human or otherwise, will be destroyed. While the more sturdy forms of life may survive a human induced global ecoocide most people will not.
WHat the ELF is trying to do is the exact opposite of terrorism. Trying to save lives is not terrorism.

yuck 13.Feb.2004 06:45

Clamydia, to many progressives are caught up in real change to risk their freedom on gestures! This would be really funny if it wasnīt true. Unfortunately, everyone seems to think that quote this is not a good time in my life to do direct action unquote (sorry, this foolish keyboard doesnīt have quotation marks). The truth is, everyone would rather send money to the sierra club and go to reactionary reformist rallies that never do anything but piss everyone off instead of creating real change. Seriously, what else has really worked? Get out there and fight the machine, not in some abstract theory but in practice, by smashing, burning and monkeywrenching the damn thing.
Iīm glad Iīm not a progressive. As a good friend of mine always says: If you are too important to risk your freedom, youīre useless.

wow, they set a bulldozer on fire 13.Feb.2004 11:47

lucky weda

I believe that something does need to happen. But setting a bulldozer on fire? I understand that they don't have much of a time window, but still....I thought the point was supposed to be "you are hurting the planet, so change your ways and be friendlier" instead of "you are hurting the planet, so we are just going to break stuff" (that's what a burning bulldozer says to me). Why not do something with the bulldozer, something a little more creative? Did anyone hear about that group of people who snuck into Stanford, (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) drugged all the cats and (dogs?) in the labs and rescued them? That was pretty darn cool. They were very efficient, were not detected and made sure the animals were treated and found homes. I would have loved to see the faces on the "researcher"'s faces. Anyway, just a thought.

But donīt you see 13.Feb.2004 15:26

Cannon

Obviously, burning a random bulldozer is indeed breaking random stuff. Burning a bulldozer that is actively destroying an ecosystem is, however targeted and necessary. If the expensive construction equipment keeps getting destroyed, it may be too unprofitable to develop an area. I agree that it would be cooler to steal the bulldozer and use it for constructive, creative ends, like building an underground, eco-friendly beer brewery or something, insulated by the earth to be the perfect beer-brewing temperature... Actually, that would be awesome! I would totally be up for that. But I digress. The point is, bulldozers are not the greatest escape vehicles, and it wouldnīt really be practical. Destroy them, get out is what the ELF is all about (that rhymes). I think it is a great strategy. Of course, it wonīt work on itīs own, it takes a multiple-pronged attack to take out industrialism. But it is indeed a heroic step.
