Jim Redden - Corporate Stooge and Apologist for the Growing Fascist Government

I had the misfortune to read the recent article in the Tribune titled "Activist indulges capitalistic cravings". It was written by Jim Redden.

Now I have heard a couple people claim that Redden is something of a progressive, but this article is just another example of useless trash pushed out by for-profit commercial media which offers nothing of value to the reader.
Here is an entire page wasted on a story about an activist who opened a restaurant, and wrote a book, which apparently some people disagree with. Redden claims in a bold photo caption that "critics both liberal and conservative call him (Rosebraugh) two-faced." However, reading through the article you will only find the single conservative critic doing so. Redden relies entirely on an anonymous posting from Indymedia, which is itself most likely from a right wing critic, to back-up his claim. In fact, there isn't a single interview with any activist to provide another viewpoint. Beyond that, the article does not give much interesting information about the restaurant. It does not review the book. It does not attempt any discussion of some of the issues that might be of value to inform readers about and at least in some part, redeem itself. No, this entire page is a complete waste of people's time. Particularly in light of other serious issues that could use more public attention. For contrast I will mention just one. Hanford. Here, just miles away, is a vast repository of radioactive and chemical toxic waste. There are 172 building sized buried tanks, some 70 of which have already leaked millions of gallons of high level radioactive waste. Waste which is leaking into aquifers that eventually feed into the Columbia river. Now that is something to be terrified of.

Redden is more than just an opportunist however. Wittingly, or unwittingly he is acting as the propaganda mouthpiece for the rising fascist police state. 12 times the term 'terrorism' is written in the article. 4 of those 'eco-terrorism'. Does he bother to mention that nobody has ever been killed by these so called eco-terrorist acts? No. Does he mention that under eco-terrorism laws, an activist crossing a forest closure line with a camera to document illegal cutting can be charged? No. Does he provide any voice for the many people and organizations who would challenge the terms and context of the government propaganda and scare tactics? No.

It took violence to break free of British rule. It took violence to free slaves. Today, the Boston Tea Party would be called a domestic terrorist act. Does he give any context or historical basis to reveal the subtleties of the issues? No. In exchange for a buck, he does his part to brainwash people into accepting the growing fascism of the government and its agencies, and to justify its increasing repression of anyone who speaks up in dissent.

Jim Redden is a corporate stooge and an apologist for the growing fascist government - Oh, and btw, Fuck the corporate media!
Thanks for the article! 09.Feb.2004 11:19

Indy Reader

I read the Tribune article by Jim Redden and I agree it is a pile of shit. Maybe Jim Redden was something of a progressive at one time (don't know myself), but he is obviously sold out now.

Commercial media 09.Feb.2004 11:32

David Drake

The best you ever get with commercial media is 'not too bad' and not often at that. The Redden article, as you point out, is propaganda vomit and that is what you get most of the time.

I have pretty much stopped reading American commercial media because it is so annoying. It is all just business as usual, while the country goes to hell.

Excellent work! 09.Feb.2004 11:34

fellow tribune watcher

it was with great disgust that i read redden's "article" on craig. it was sensational fluff, devoid of any meaningful discussion of issues. writing about craig gives a journalist an opportunity to delve into all sorts of interesting topics -- topics that are changing the way we live and act, and the foundations of the very country. by missing this opportunity -- or by purposely avoiding it -- redden revealed himself for the irresponsible (if not outright dangerous) twit that he is.

thanks, PDX Dragon, for this well-written expose.

haven't read his book or eaten at his restaurant 09.Feb.2004 11:38

but i am sick and tired

of the crap that gets posted here on IMC every time the subject is Craig. Now, with this Jim Redden article, we can see that we've bitten ourselves in the ass, providing jerks like Redden the ammunition they need for a personal attack.

I read this great quotation recently, and I can't remember who said it, unfortunately, but Jim Redden proves it true with this piece. The quote, from the 1970's, I think, is: "The challenge to American journalism is not to stay in business; it's to stay in journalism." Thanks, Jim, for continuing to destroy corporate media from within.

Makes me sick 09.Feb.2004 11:47

internet reader

I couldn't agree more with the poster. You describe how it feels when I read the dominant media to check with the recent spin cycle. The better liars will include a few facts or clues that I use to google search to uncover the truth and in that way some printed media can be useful to lead me into truth.
When we got a new police chief, in a major north east city, the press gave enough basic information to know what a NWO snake he was. Further google search turned up all the dirty connections to OKC and the DCsniper shooting, so the liars can still be somewhat informative if you have the internet to root out the connections.

Jim Redden is really depressing. 09.Feb.2004 12:20

me

I had some run ins with Jim Redden years ago after Seattle and he pulled out the "I used to be a radical" card with me, and did an adoring write-up after our interview...at a time when I was being a real piece of shit. When I think about the adolescent and anti-social politics I used to thrive on and how much Jim Redden ate it up then, I'm suprised he doen't totally love Craig now.

I disagree 09.Feb.2004 13:10

with your view of Redden

Jim Redden has done some great work, in my opinion. He broke the story about Goldschmidt ripping off the taxpayer to the tune of over a million bucks thru SAIF and the way he got his wife, Diana Snowden, to route PERS investment money into the Texas investment group that wants to buy PGE (headed by, who else, Neil Goldschmidt). Redden has done many articles exposing corruption and waste in local government. I think he has nerve and is no sell out. A journalist can't hit it out of the park every time, but I think Redden does a good job. The Tribune, unlike the Oregonian, has the nerve to go against the establishment, and Redden has done most of the muckracking articles. I think you guys should lighten up on him.

I too used to like Jim's writing...till I read MORE of it! 09.Feb.2004 13:17

Merlin

When I first retired and moved here to PDX, I happened to be listening to an Art Bell (or maybe it was a
Jeff Rense program) Coast-to-CoastAM show in which Jim was the guest for an hour or so, pushing
his book. I was so impressed that I followed up and bought the book and read it. I was favorably, as I
said, impressed with the guy....till, that is, I began to read more and more of his stuff in the little weekly
PORTLAND TRIBUNE (or is it bi-weekly?) and decided it was nothing but "KorpKapitalism" warmed-
over, trying to mock progressive thoughts and give "impression" it was a progressive alternative to the
Establlishment rag that dominates the market here. Then, I simply quite reading 'em altogether, as I
don't want my mind infected with such bullshit...as there are other "alternatives" out there that suit me!

So, sadly it seems...a lot of these once good journalists get bitten by the greed-bug or whatever hook
KorpKapitalism lays into 'em, and they're reeled in to that boat! Too bad! Sad!

"A journalist can't hit it out of the park every time"

Out of the park? This didn't even make it onto the field. It is floating in the toilet!

Peak Oil 09.Feb.2004 15:28

Golden Seal

Along with Hanford, Peak Oil would be another good subject. The level of denial is astounding. No, better to focus on some guy who opened a restaurant and whether that restaurant is consistent with his expressed beliefs. Who the fuck cares? In case you hadn't noticed, but there are some serious problems in the world.

It is unbelievable. Some guy expresses ideas that are outside the norm and everyone gets in a tizzy. This is such a repressed country and ideas of free speech and democracy are so much bullshit. People have forgotten what it means to be human. The most effective arm of the police state is the level of self policing. That is where the media comes in and Jim Redden is doing his job to insure that it stays that way.

Jim Redden does not deserve kudos. He is helping the state suppress dissent. He is a purveyor of the status quo. You will never see someone like Redden, nor that Budlick guy talk about what is going on. They will not rock the boat. It is up to people who do not get paid to be a voice for truth and for sanity.

I am glad this critique went up because the Redden article is a disgusting bit of government disinfo.

"Beware the newspapers. They will have you hating the oppressed, and loving the people doing the oppressing."
Malcolm X

Malcolm X was one smart dude, and everyone should think about this quote and see just how apt it is. Think about it. Your life may depend on it.

Jim Redden for President 09.Feb.2004 19:07

It's all about courage

I was another citizen who wanted to believe that Jim would be the spearhead for real journalism. I guess it's hard to stay hungry while you're sucking the teat of the well funded status quo.

I'm so scared, I can't even think anymore! 09.Feb.2004 21:01

Sybil

We have many things to live in fear of since 911, at least that's what our wise leader tells us and I believe every word he says. It's hard to keep up with the growing list of organizations affiliated with all these different kinds of terrorism, but thankfully people in the corporate media like Jim Redden are doing their best to keep us informed of the latest threats and terminology in our valiant war against terror.
I don't know about you people, but I for one can hardly sleep at night with the thought that eco-terrorists are living in our very city and roaming through our very forests. It's a good thing the logging companies are raizing them all to prevent them from becoming safe-havens for these domestic creatons and their wildlife co-conspiritors. By the way, why hasn't the spotted owl been recognized as aiding and abbetting terrorists yet, when their obviously helping the eco-terrorists carry out thier evil forest-saving plots?! I don't get it.
Trees are a domestic threat. I could walk along outside and if I weren't looking, be violently hit right upside the head by a tree! Good thing our president keeps us on hightened alert. Anyone who would want to protect such a malicious cancer of the earth is obviously out to kill us all!
And then there's the terrorist Animal Liberation Front freeing puppies and bunnies and lab rats and whatnot! What if they invade the Safeway and eat all our safe GE food?! The whole country would starve to death! They're just trying to kill the whole world!
Thank you, Jim Redden, for keeping us all informed about the scary subtype-hyphenated terrorists in our midsts. You are a true paratrooper in the war against our minds, or is that for our minds...oh well, whatever.

Hey all you revolutionary guys and gals, if you're going to spend so much time talking about the article, at least give people the link to it.

- Jim Redden, fascist dupe

PS - I appreciated the comment on my Art Bell show interview. It resulted in the single-biggest sales boost for the book.

I confess, I followed Jim Redden's link and read his article. It's true, I would not have done so if he hadn't posted it, because I don't read the PBA crap in the Tribune if I can help it. But, having read it, I can now offer a more informed criticism.

Jim, you can make light of being a fascist dupe if you want to, but it doesn't lessen the sting. You have, in fact, sold out. You have squandered a gift, however trivial it may have been. Once, at least, you could write passably well. But in selling yourself as you have done, you've wasted your small talent to the point of atrophy. You can pass that banal nonsense off to your corporate masters, but don't try to peddal it here. These readers see through you.

You have accused Craig Rosebraugh of being "two faced," when in fact, it is you who has made a career out of skating the line between "alternative" voice and duped mouthpiece for corporate interests. From your slanted articles about the Muslim community in Portland to this most recent piece of fluff directed at discrediting someone whom the police state considers to be a threat to their power, can you really not know what you're doing? Is it possible that you really don't recognize that you're being used to perpetuate both propaganda and consent to the corporate police state? Or is it just that you don't care, considering that it pays your bills.

You may enjoy sitting back on your laurels doing fluffy, slanted commentary while the brownshirts repeatedly beat down Craig Rosebraugh's door. But one day, they may be at your door. How will you feel then, knowing that you helped them get there by building a climate of consent to their abuses? Will anyone come to your defense? Or will everyone who might have already be behind barbed wire?

Like you dudes and dudesses... 10.Feb.2004 10:53

...I'm highly disappointed. Jim used to do a decent job running the alternative weekly, PDXS, but since writing for the Tribune, he has compromised himself to the point of being irelevant. Too bad.

yeah, I'm sure scared too... 10.Feb.2004 12:44

I really don't want to sound preachy here, but here goes.
So just about everyone who visits this site is basically aware that mass media sux, hence the visiting of this site. That's great. So why just go around attacking loser "journalists"? Yeah, someone might listen, but I think that sometimes actions are better than words. Make a point to read and distribute alternative/indy/anarchist zines. Tell everyone about this website. It might do more than repeatedly voicing what we all know to be true: corporate media producers are liars. By the way, does anyone read "Adbusters"? It's a fun little zine. Even if you (trolls and indies alike) don't agree with everything in the articles and poetry; written whatnot -the photos and drawings make you think and sometimes offer a new perspective. I would buy this solely for the pictures to put on my wall, not to mention the poetry and information offered. This Jim fellow seems cocky and self-satisfied. What a butthead.

Tribune is Portland's own Enquirer - gee, great 10.Feb.2004 15:50

GRINGO STARS

The Tribune is great for making into papier mache. Their shrill headlines about Kobe (and today's insipid headline "Handcuffs, porn found in home of UP suspect") sure must sell ads. Newspapers typically have an over 20% profit margin, which is astounding. Any business would kill for an 8% profit margin, but paper$ really rake it in, with ads alone, with a free paper. Newspapering is big business. Anti-capitalists will never be treated fairly in the "objective" Tribune.

He's quite the egotist who enjoys any publicity, negative publicity included.
