WOLVES TO BE KILLED IN ALASKA

The Alaska legislation has allowed citizens to kill wolves from aircraft in an effort to increase moose and caribou numbers for out of state hunting interests. Alaska voters REJECTED such an act TWICE (1996 & 2000), however the Governor has ignored them. The flash presentation by the Alaska Wildlife Alliance sums it all up.
Check out the flash presentation "The killing of wolves in Alaska." Comments welcome and encouraged.

Save the wolves 27.Jan.2004 12:22

In Defense of Animals needs to get involved, if they are not already. Save the wolves! Around Yellowstone, they've strayed into cow pastures too. Protect the wolf from gun-toting crazies. Wolves are fascinating & elegant.

Wolves 27.Jan.2004 13:07

Hey

Wolves are beautiful. I came face to face with one a few years ago (I won't say where). We stared at each other for several moments before it casually walked off into the brush. It displayed no fear and displayed no aggression and no curiousity. What really got me was the way it seem to be totally unconcerned by me while looking me straight in the eye. It was in the middle of hunting a grouse, which I accidently spooked before I noticing the tall black figure. I ruined its supper. I thought it was a black bear for a moment. They're truly magnificent animals and deserve our help.

By the way, I'm a 'gun nut'. I shoot targets though (golf balls). I wouldn't shoot a burglar in my home let alone an animal. Not all gun nuts are unethical hunters with nothing but bloodlust in thier hearts. I've known hunters that literaly get sexually excited when they kill something, so trust me, I know your disgust.

I'm no expert on wolves, but judging from the one I met, they need to learn to have an extreme fear of humans if they want to protect themselves. I'm wondering if anyone knows wether or not it's a good Idea or not to attempt to spook these fine animals when confronted by them, to teach them fear. For instance, would it be a good idea to fire off a round to spook and scare a wolf? I'm thinking the first time they hear a gunshot shouldn't be thier last.

SCOTT N. MORAN/ ALASKA WILDLIFE ALLIANCE scott@akwildlife.org

Hello everyone -

Your comments are great and appreciated.

Unfortunately, hunting wolves is not our only problem. The Alaska legislature ignored the voters (and 500,000 Americans) by allowing people to shoot wolves from passing aircraft. This results in wounded animals left to freezeor suffer in the snow. The wolves' tracks are followed into the open tundra of Interior Alaska, where they have no where to hide. Then they are chased to exhaustion and blasted.

In addition to this asinine practice, people are allowed to chase wolves with snowmachines (snowmobiles) until they are exhaused, and then killed. People also set whats called 'saturation snares' which is basically a very large amount of traps in a certain area, usually around bait. They can take out an entire pack of wolves, who are then left to die of starvation, shock, or the elements.

People - this is 2003. We are no longer in the dark ages. Help us spread the word about these atrocities. Check out the Alaska Wildlife Alliance at www.akwildlife.org. We have many plans to protect this incredible species.

wolves are keystone species 27.Jan.2004 16:15

Canis lupus

Wolves are needed as the top carnivores of ecosystems. Hunting a moose or elk with a gun is not the same as the relationship between moose/elk and wolves. The wolf will effect the herd differently than the hunter, watching and selecting the moose based on physical characteristics we are unaware of. A human hunter with a gun seldom has the vision beyond the crosshairs, taking out a pregnant female or young healthy male while standing still does not benefit moose, wolf or human..

Wolves are complex sentient beings that have social relationships and love one another similar to humans. There were incidents when human children were raised by wolves after their family was killed by other humans. The wolf pack included the human child and treated them as equals. The only problem was when these mysterious "wolf-children" were discovered by snivelization and were isolated with a series of psychological tests..

When humans mistreat wolves in such cruel ways, we are killing a part of ourselves that is still struggling to breath the fresh air of a vanishing world..

We need wolf restoration, not more slaughter of intelligent and sensitive canines. Wolves are the grandparents of domestic dogs, and most people would not inflict this cruelty on dogs, so why do we torture the grandparents of dogs?

The Wolf Show in Ontario seeks to edutain people and dispell the myths of "Big Bad Wolf". The only Big Bad anything we should be worried about now is GW Bush and the anti-life war machine imperialists..

this is another case of Rethuglicanism at work 27.Jan.2004 17:24

pity the wolves

this is merely another case of Rethuglicanism at work...why do u think Frank gave up his US Senate seat
and came back to Alaska to be Governor (and put his daughter in as his replacement in US Senate)....to
push the Rethuglican agenda of exploitation down the throats of the people, the land, and the animals!
Simple when you see who is behind the action...when it's Rethuglican's, it's a no-brainer (just look for a
money trail...where it leads>>>exploitation for $$$)

Definition: Hunting 27.Jan.2004 18:09

Bob

hunting
n 1: the pursuit and killing or capture of wild animals regarded
as a sport [syn: hunt]
2: the activity of looking thoroughly in order to find
something or someone [syn: search, hunt]
3: the work of finding and killing or capturing animals for
food or pelts [syn: hunt]
----------------------------------------------------
So in this context, basically a quest of food or sport. I don't know anyone who would eat a wolf and I don't see the sport of shooting an animal from an aircraft. It's cruel bloodlust, pure and simple.

That's just sick and twisted. Wolves are beautiful creatures, and if they want the moose and caribou population to go up, then introduce more into the forests! Geez, some people are so damn stupid. We should sign a petition. Someone get a petetion going and I'll sign it.

I love wolves like anyone else and have a great bond with wolves because I used to work for a sanctuary. I have seen them play and its just hard to hear they are being killed for no resion. While I was working for the sanctuary everytime I go see them they are just jumping up and down and lets just say they lick me too much but they are great animals and I want to do anything in my power to save them. I morn for the wolves that have been killed by huntersand i just hope they won't die out.

What's Wrong With Them 25.Jun.2005 16:06

Help these magnificent animals... vuealpha@aol.com

We all know that this is not right, but surely no one ever speak up clearly and demandly to the government about this. It's hard to see such pictures as those. To my thought, wolves are the most common animal here in United State and now they are being killed as decades ago. Peoples knows more about wolves than any other predator here in US. They are the top predator. Wolves killing caribou, moose, and deer are not cruelty, it's how they live and it's their nature. Kill other animal to survive, that's exactly what god created them for, to control the prey population. And we people have more deer and caribou than we can ever kill and hunt, why killing wolves and said "to increase the caribou, and moose population." I think the people that are killing wolves are just making excuses so they can get a chance to kill wolves. We certanly have enough preys to co-exist with wolves. No need for killing them. I am a hunter myself, and I ain't ashame to admit that. But I don't kill other predators, just as we are. I only hunt whitetail... Prey are widespread in US. Please, wolves killer got to understand. NO MORE WOLVES SLAUGHTERING!!!

>.< WHEN WILL THEY GET IT? 11.Sep.2005 00:23

an annoymous wolf lover CMM@usamedia.tv

I may have never seen a real live wolf before (but I really want to!) but this is just terrible! I wish I could just look the Governor in they eye and ask him what the fuck he was thinking! Sorry for cussing there, but it really makes me mad! I too am only 14 years old with wolves being my favorite animal. It's just sad to hear stories and see pictures of these aeiral slaughters! If teens can even recognise this as wrong and inhumane why can't the Governor of a freakin state see that?!? Shooting a wolf is just like shooting your own dog, how could you do that? It's terrible how barbaric this is! Sometimes I just want to go up to the people in the pictures holding up a dead wolf and strangle them to death!! As already stated here, unlike sport hunting, these guys are helping eachother. The wolves pick off the sick and weak moose and caribou making the herds stronger while they get a meal. And only about 1/10 hunts is succesful! Unlike this aerial hunting, they could go all day until they kill something. >.< It just makes me want to puke! The wolves have a vital part in the ecosystem, if they're whiped out the whole ecosystem will be screwed up! They have shows on Animal Plannet showing the ASPCA and other services preventing animal crulety in towns and such, when will some organization get on this case?

Remember, alawys sign the petitions that are out there, they help. (Hey, if you want a link to a link to a petition click here;  link to www.neopets.com it sounds like it's going to help promote ideas of wolves being good (ideas, what am I saying? they ARE good!) to the public.

Stop the slaughter, put this up on your site if you have one (maybe add a linl)

HUNTER SUCK!!!!!!!!!! 03.Jan.2006 15:04

anonymous i_love_wolves@bluemarble.net

I'm 12 years old. I'm writing a story about the affects on this. I think it is a HORRIBLE thing to do. I think that that law would be illegal. The wolves have feelings to, just like us. But some people (like those STUPID HUNTERS) don't get that. Wolves a my FAVORITE animal. I wish that some day that there will NOT be a law like that. If we a band together, maybe we could do something about that. It even could go world wide! I HATE HUNTERS. My dad hunts, but would NEVER DO THAT! FREAKEN HUNTERS!

STOP!!!! 03.Jan.2006 15:15

STOP AREAL WOLF KILLING 24.Feb.2006 14:17

Sloane and Roger Jensen jensenroger@yahoo.com

ROGER-
Sorry about that previous arcticle, I accidentally hit "enter". As I was saying, there were tons of wolves and prey. The prey wasn't dying because of the so-called "evil wolves". Ergo, when there are more wolves the ungulates do better, because they kill off the sick, weak, old, etc. gov.....er, Frank Murkowski is a dolt. He just hates wolves. And to that signer whining about Rebulicans, I'm one, and I care about wolves as much as you don't!

SLOANE
I'm cofused. Hunters are already allowed to trap wolves and shoot them. But why must they be killed from the air? How cowerdly and unsporting can you get?! Alaskans voted AGAINST (not for) this garbage twice. I'm planning to go to Alaska when I grow up, to study and photograph wolves. In other words, This governor isn't just killing wolves for stupid reasons, he's ruining my future! He's more loyal to his hunting buddies then his voters. I love wolves, and I know a lot about them. And maybe there is a good reason to "control" wolves. BUT WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP?????? i just hope the wolves in the national parks stay safe.....

When are you going to stop? 25.Feb.2006 15:28

Senseless 15.Aug.2007 18:27

I think it's pathetic the senseless aerial killing of one of the most majestic animals on earth..the wolf. When is this nonsense going to stop? Maybe we'll just make the wolves extinct..would that make all the hunters who kill these beautiful animals happy?!! Wolves are so much like people, and people just want to wipe them off the face of the earth...I guess it's easier to destroy what we don't understand...the live in families, care for their young and hunt to survive...isn't that what we do...how I would love to make people understand that God created these magnificent creatures to be appreciated not to be destroyed!!! I have been crusading for wolves for years and will continue to do so until aerial killings are stopped. With all of todays technology, can't someone come up with a better way of keeping wolves (whose land is being inhabited by people)away from cattle without killing them...God didn't create such beauty to be destroyed..animals are to admired, respected, and loved. We can learn so much from them if only we open our minds as well as our heart.
