(01-24) 13:11 PST DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) --

Asked on Saturday whether he considered the United States to be an empire, Vice President Dick Cheney had the perfect dodge: Ask my wife.

Lynne Cheney was responsible, the vice president said, for the quote from Benjamin Franklin on the family Christmas card: "If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?"

"That quote was selected by my wife," Cheney told the man who asked the question after Cheney's speech at the World Economic Forum. "She would have to explain why it was on the Christmas card."

(snip..)

Also, he said, if the United States were a true empire, "We would certainly preside over a much greater piece of the earth's surface than we currently do."

now why would this quote... 25.Jan.2004 12:08

this thing here

... of all of ben's many quotes, be used for mr. and mrs. richard cheney's christmas card? and i also wonder if the reason ben said this is the same reason mr. and mrs. cheney used it...

"If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?"

i think mr and mrs. cheney believe the quote is saying this: "god approves of empires because they couldn't happen without his help." is that what ben meant, lynn and dick? or is that what you think he meant?

in my opinion, it's one more creepy abuse of the christian god and the christian religion by right wing america, who love to claim god and j.c. are exclusively on their side and "justify" and legitimize all that they do. in this respect, they are no different than the taliban. the term "separation of church and state" is meant to be a warning full of wisdom, a big flashing red light and a piercing buzzing sound, but they just cannot seem to get it...
