I NEED A LAWYER!!!..but, want to know if he/she is a Republican first...

This is a general request for assistance in informing me as to how to find the list of Bush
contributor's that I am told was reprinted, in it's entirety, here at this website's Open Pub-
lishing page sometime back. I, personally, have need for a lawyer, and before I engage
one, I want to know before calling to set up appointment whether he/she is a Republican
or have been a Bush contributor. Any commentary posted on directing me to finding the
listing of local area contributors will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
request for information on finding the listing of portland area republican's that contributed to
george w. bush's political campagne.

I put the original list up, but it was pretty heavily edited due to space (I only listed the Bush campaign donors, over $2000, living in Oregon.) This list will therefore not have, say, $1999 donors, or donors living in Vancouver, or donors donating to the republican national convention in general rather than Bush in specific.

Here is where I got the information, do some searches here under first names, last names, ZIP codes, etc. TO get GOOD info do several searches under each name that you are thinking of doing business with (such as "Bill Doe, Will Doe, William Doe, Billy Doe, B. Doe, W. Doe, etc.):

This is a US Government website constructed by the Federal Elections Comission, all the data in here is legal public acess data, and you can not get in trouble for using it to screen law firms (or any other business dealing). It is nation-wide, and includes all political donations that are legal (and many that are illegal but not prosecuted).

It's on the FEC website, I believe.

It occurs to me though that if there isn't a list of more trustworthy lawyers already compiled, there should be. It's an election year. We might need 'em. :)

call organizations like the National Lawyers Guild or Oregon Center for Law that have had a history of being ready to support progressive/radical causes. All you need is one name, from there you can ask for referrals. You can find references on Indymedia to legal support at various events. Lists are tricky.

why restrict a listing to just lawyers? 10.Jan.2004 21:58

what about other Republicans?

Since so much in the way of lies have come forth from the Bush Administration, and the Republican's are certainly tainted as result,
I see no reason whatsoever to restrict a "beware...Republican"-list to just lawyers....why not:
.Republican Real Estate brokers/agents...can we trust them to be honest in brokering our housing deals?
.Republican Pharmacists...can we trust them to give us the best deal on pricing for our Rx's and are they safe?
.Republican Physicians...can we trust them when they scoff at Mad Cow Disease to be taken seriously?
.Republican Surgeon...can we trust that the mandated surgery is really necessary and not a cash-flow generator?
.Republican grocery...can we trust that his prices are fair, that we aren't being sold tainted food, that the scanners
at the check-out counter aren't going to cheat us?
.Republican newspaper publisher/editor...how do we know they are telling us the TRUTH as they claim they're
following the highest standards of journalism, when it is merely very
astute propaganda tossing.

The list can go on and on...surely you get my point>>>if these people are contributing large sums of money to a known liar and
his re-election, then how in the hell can we honestly trust them with our lives, our property, our money, our food, and our Rx's?
THINK ABOUT IT FOLK'S....THEN START ASKING QUESTIONS OF THESE REPUBLICAN PROFESSIONALS YOU'VE COME TO
DEPEND UPON AND START QUESTIONING THEIR SINCEREITY IF THEY INSIST UPON SUPPORTING THIS KNOWN LIAR IN
THE WHITE HOUSE...WHY WOULD THEY DO SO KNOWINGLY, AND IF SO, THEN THIS IS TIP-OFF TO YOU THAT THEY MAY
NOT BE THE CLEAR-HEADED, RATIONAL, INTELLIGENT, SOCIALLY AWARE PERSON YOU ONCE THOUGHT THEY WERE!

republican? 10.Jan.2004 23:32

I think you should be more concerned if the person is a capitalist, and that happens to include both democrats and republicans. If a person is putting money before justice, their priorities are more than a little misconstrued. Too many people consider democrats to be kinder than republicans when capitalism is the overall problem. We in america haven't had a moraly sound leader ever I am sorry to say. So please don't confuse democrats for the patron saints of humanity, the problem is much bigger than that. Blessings and Peace, Todd

gerry

There's a law center at approximately SE 33rd and Belmont that's known for representing radicals, progressives and the like. You can also check out Kfoury & Elliot (Nader's buddies) and Alan Graf, who hosts a show on KBOO and is representing some of those abused at the Bush protest of 2000. Good luck.

Why not... 11.Jan.2004 00:14

Why not try talking to your prospective attorneys, and geting a "feel" for where they are coming from? Trust your bullshit detector...

clarification 11.Jan.2004 02:38

.

a couple of clarifications to the post by gerry.

the belmont law center is at 34th and belmont. the lawyers there are paul loney and stuart sugarman. (these guys know a lot of people and can probably make a few recommendations.) they are with the national lawyers guild, which i can practically guarantee has no republicans.

'nader's friends' are actually 'kafoury and mcdougal'. they are located in the oregon pioneer building on sw stark between 3rd and 4th avenues. they are personal injury attorneys mainly, with a bit of political activism thrown in.

alan graf is a 'hippie lawyer' who does mainly social security disability law. alan is also with the national lawyers guild.

any of these attorneys would be glad to give you some resources to check and perhaps the name(s) of attorney(s) who might be able to help you out.

in addition to making certain the lawyer you hire is in tune with your social and political beliefs, you obviously need to find a lawyer that actually practices the type of law you need help with. for example, a lawyer who specializes in divorces is not going to be any good if you aren't getting a divorce. (kinda like a heart surgeon. might be an absolute genius in their field, but is useless if you have a broken arm.)

you can learn a lot about attorneys by checking out their names on internet search engines. results will return news articles on their cases, if they made the press; link to articles they have published, etc.

also, you can take a look at  http://www.martindale.com (martindale hubble), which is a lawyer locator. type in the name of the lawyer. most lawyers maintain listings with martindale hubble, which list their name, address, area of specialty, articles written, sample client lists, etc.

Ask 11.Jan.2004 12:49

Scooter scottlee@yandex.ru

Ask your prospective lawyer to what party she belongs. No law against that. If she won't answer don't make a fee agreement with her.

Another good idea already mentioned was contact the National Lawyers Guild of Portland: Alan Graf or myself, we can help you find someone who specializes in the area of law you need.

Another thing to remember is that depending on your circumstances, time limits may apply. If you think you need a lawyer you should consult one as soon as you can. Most give a free consultation over the phone and maybe a free follow-up if you have a case.

The ACLU probably has a referral service too.

The Oregon St. Bar has a legal referral service, but they don't know party affiliation. You can always contact them www.osbar.org for a referral and then do what I first suggested, Ask what that lawyer's political affiliations are.

Good luck.
