URGENT MEDICAL ALERT FOR PROTESTERS WHO WERE IN MIAMI

One person who was regularly at the Conergence Center in Miami has come down with bacterial meningitis shortly after leaving Miami and almost certainly contracted it while there! [I know from another very reliable source that the person's condition is extremely serious.] Please read this article and act accordingly! Also, please spread the information widely on activist web sites and mailing lists (after convincing yourself that it is genuine, of course!) and, if you can, translate it into Spanish.

URGENT MEDICAL ALERT! This is an URGENT alert for all protesters present during the FTAA protests in Miami. THIS IS NOT A TROLL POSTING! PLEASE READ!

An activist from New Jersey has contracted bacterial meningitis. This occurred at some point during the Miami convergence, as he manifested syptoms on the twenty-hour drive home from Florida. Syptoms include a high fever (his was 103.7), numbness in the hands and feet, and other flu-like symptoms. If anyone has flu-like symptoms, GO TO THE HOSPITAL. Bacterial meningitis has a very quick incubation period and is highly contagious.

The activist in question helped in the decontamination area of the convergence space. Some have also referred to an orange, powdery substance medics had come into contact with, as well as this activist. There may be a connection. Please let people know!

This is not meant to be paranoid. This is a medical alert to anyone who was at the Miami convergence for the FTAA protests. If you exhibit no flu-like symptoms, such as a high fever and/or tingling or numb sensation in hands and feet, then chances are next to nil that you have bacterial meningitis. But if you do, please be safe and go to the hospital.

Black Cross Health Collective and MASHH CLINIC Collective info@blackcross collective.org or mashh@wildrockies.org

Please don't start urban myth-rumors like this and please y'all, don't overreact! The statement that bacterial meninigits is "very contagious" is FALSE. Transmission of the organism occurs by exchange of respiratory secretions; thus close contact is believed to be important in the spread of the disease. To infer that someone who was in Miami recently and has flu-like symptoms should immediately check into an ER is a dangerous overreaction. Most people exposed do not get bacterial meningitis. The last two people who acquired the disease in Oregon were teenagers in a mosh pit at a metal concert in Salem. Everyone who over indulges tomorrow is going to have "flu-like" symptoms. Panic not. The presenting symptoms are: 1. Distinctly the WORST HEADACHE you've EVER had in your life. 2. Stiff, and we mean STIFF (not sore!) NECK. 3. HIGH FEVER (above 102 in an adult) 4. Then the symptoms get worse and by then the patient has surely been ushered to an ER.
The conditions that cause one person to become clinically ill while another carrier remains well are not well understood. The organism, Neisseria meningitidis, remains sensitive to a large number of antibiotics. (If that notion placates you in any way.) Check your attitude, stay positive, drink plenty of pure water, eat well and sleep. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER TO WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE EATING OR PICKING YOUR NOSE!

feature this maybe? 29.Nov.2003 00:03

...

Do you suppose this could be featured? The uber-indymedia site has it (well, a different message to the same ends,) in a nice box at the top of the site. Mass panic is a bad thing, but this is a serious disease and an even-headed message from this site might help slow/quell more rambunctious notice. Maybe a bullet list of symptems with a few notes on what is definently known about the situation of the guy that came down with it?

oh sure 29.Nov.2003 15:01

urban legend

oh sure like were supposed to by the CIA guy postin under the name "Black Cross Collective" so that infected people will continue to spead this awful disease to other anti-goverment activists.

The so-called "Black Cross Collective" statement is another black operation from the CIA which is intended to cover-up for the fact that BIOLOGICAL WARFARE was used against protesters at the FTAA demonstrations in Miami. It just another thinly veiled conspiracy to harm the anit-FTAA movement. "Black Cross" is has known connections to the Mossad as many members are also dual citizens with Israel. Don't fall for this.

IF YOU WERE AT THE ANTI-FTAA DEMONSTRATION IN MIAMI THERE IS A REALLY GOOD CHANCE THAT YOU WERE EXPOSED TO A BIOLOGICAL ATTACK CONDUCTED BY THE CIA.

GO TO THE HOSPITAL AND GET YOURSELF CHECKED OUT AND CALL THE PRESS~!!!!

Bacterial Menegitis, although dangerous, is not super contagious. Chill the fuck out kids, get back in the streets and do make sure your hands are relativly clean. When going for multiple day protests where sinks are in short supply, hand sanitizers containing alchohal are very useful.

What's all the fuss???? 01.Dec.2005 17:50

are you guys kidding me?????
Of course meningitis can be serious if not treated properly, but somebody is way out of line to believe these is a CIA conspiracy to infect protesters. Get a grip!! The classic symptoms of meningitis are a high fever (102+), headache, and most importantly, a VERY stiff neck.... in which you cannot move it!!!!

I think "oh sure" needs to be checked out for schizophrenia???

Peace out!!!!!
