STUDENT ACTIVIST ALLIANCE

It is an ignorant society that neglects its ancestors, a chaotic society that scorns its students. The Portland Public Student Activist Alliance is evidence of the virtues in a society, in that Students are taking action at their schools and in their communities, not only with their teachers and parents but along side their neighbors, culture and Portland community. Because the students of today are the adults of tomorrow, it is a necessity to the very being and threads of society and safety, that our students today are well taught for the real post 9/11 world.

The U.S. imperialist wars abroad and within continue darkening the smog filled skies of our world. As American civil liberties and constitutional rights evaporate under the boot of the U.S. PATRIOT act. Mostly Working class sons and daughters are brainwashed into nationalist gun-toting terror troops and are shipped off to kill and die in Halliburton Inc. and Boeing's oil war. The greater number of fellow students K-12 in public schools throughout the nation are left to fend for themselves intellectually. Oregon has one of the highest homeless and hunger rates in the country. Beyond the physical hunger, which presides in the US plutocracy- Oregon's public schools, due to lack of funding have left children and young adults starving for real knowledge that can be applied to a post 9/11 world. Art, music and theater classes have been forced into starvation. The dropout rate in Oregon and other states increases, leaving students dead intellects out in the cold, vulnerable to the gnashing teeth of army recruiters and war profiteers. Those who don't dropout are left to freeze in the cold hallways of institutionalized "public school".
Those who have no other financial choice but to stay in public school shuffle along the dim hallways like cattle. An impersonal bell rings signaling that the incarceration of their minds begun yet again and students go to class barely ready to face the barrage of the virtually useless busywork to which they are subjected. This adds more and more bricks to the wall of inequality, ageism, classism, anti-creativity, and war-mongering fascism.

Institutionalized ageism has long been apart of American scholastic culture. Rules, regulations, laws and orders have been dictated to youth down through the years. The Portland Public Student Activist Alliance (S.A.A.) and R.S.A.A. are revolutionary because there is no other Grassroots youth facilitated and organized group or entity in the U.S. that are run solely for and by youth. Last year students from Riverdale, Wilson, Cleveland and Grant high schools organized walkouts, sit-ins, teach-ins, and sleep-ins to show what state budget cuts were and are doing to public education in Portland. Also see STUDENT GENERAL STRIKE... also see Oregon State Capital Protest
and Student Anti-War Action...

RACEISIM, CLASSISIM, AGEISM, HOMOPHOBIA etc... are simply rocks and walls in the way of toeing and planting a beautiful seed in the community, and once that seed is planted, once it sprouts and grows, there is nothing more pure and more beautiful.

dual POWEER 20.Nov.2003 08:13

Dual power = revolution

Dual Power in this case i think what the author means is, by taking POWER away from the state... and giving it back to youth or community.

IE Liberation scools, community parks and or gardens... community transportation... etc

GO KIDS! 20.Nov.2003 08:17

Truely educated never graduate.

I hve seen alot of the SAA's action from last year, and have been helping along with what I can this year. I just wanted to say that it brings tears of joy to my eyes to see our youth doing such wonderfull things.

dual power = 20.Nov.2003 12:43

.

Dual Power: a situation wherein a self-defined community has created for itself a political/economic system which is an operating alternative to the dominant state/capitalist establishment. The dual power consists of alternative institutions which provide for the needs of the community, both material and social, including food, clothing, housing, health care, communication, energy, transportation, educational opportunities and political organization. The dual power is necessarily autonomous from, and competitive with, the dominant system, seeking to encroach upon the latter's domain, and, eventually, to replace it (Dominick, Brian, "An Introduction to Dual Power Strategy").
