Reclaiming Our History -- 11 November 1887

116 years ago on this date -- Black Friday, 11 November 1887 -- the State of Illinois executed four innocent men. August Spies, Adolph Fischer, Aulbert Parsons, and George Engel were hanged after being falsely accused and convicted of throwing a bomb into a group of policemen.
The trial was rife with evidence and witness tampering, a packed jury, and even the prosecuting attorney was caught admitting in private the innocence of the accused. But that didn't matter. Their real crime was of being anarchists and labor agitators who were threatening the profits of Chicago's elite.
