Collective Punishment, Reported with Western Objectivity

Against the Geneva Convention? So what?
Please read second paragraph of this report. A few dozen war crimes implied in an innocuous paragraph, reported with western objectivity. This, surely, is the essence of journalism.

TIKRIT, Iraq - An Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed Friday apparently shot down by insurgents killing all six U.S. soldiers aboard and capping the bloodiest seven days in Iraq (news - web sites) for Americans since the fall of Baghdad.

In retaliation, American troops backed by Bradley fighting vehicles swept through Iraqi neighborhoods before dawn Saturday, blasting houses suspected of being insurgent hideouts with machine guns and heavy weapons fire.

"This is to remind the town that we have teeth and claws and we will use them," said Lt. Col. Steven Russell, commander of the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment.

"Hours after the helicopter went down, U.S. forces pounded the area near Saddam's ancestral
home with bombs and mortar shells.

Two F-16s flew low over the marshy area near the crash site and dropped at least two 500-pound bombs, CNN's Nic Robertson reported.

Dozens of artillery shells, mortars and howitzers rained down on the area, Robertson said, beginning late Friday and going into early Saturday."

"After midnight, Russell's convoy of Humvees and Bradley fighting vehicles, their headlights turned off, set out across Tikrit toward the three buildings insurgents were suspected of using.

Shoulder-fired rockets, a missile, and heavy machine gun fire slammed into an abandoned warehouse. Soldiers yelled, "Knock, knock," and "Good morning" in celebration as the structure crumbled amid clouds of dust and smoke.

Although most houses had their lights on, nobody dared to look outside. When a woman was heard coughing from inside one house, soldiers trained their guns and the red laser night-sights on a second-floor window. The coughing quickly stopped."

This from NBC News last night:

First brigade comander Colonel James Hickey said the army suspects hostile fire.
<snip>
While the Army isn't sure about the reason of tonights crash the response tonight was very clear. Colonel Hickey called for a show of force in the same area where the Blackhawk went down. F15 Eagle strikefighters dropped 500 pound bombs and artillery units fired 105mm howitzers.
<snip>
[Colonel Hickey said] "We will use any resourse necessary to stop attacks against our forces, use any force necessary to destroy our enemies." Regardless of who was responsible for the downing of the chopper, tonight's message was calculated to make it clear to everyone in Tikrit and Iraq that when it comes to attacks on coalition forces; fire will be met with fire.
