UNITE (star here) RESIST (?)

This is one of those... "does anyone know.. questions."
frankly,i see Unite * Resist all over Portland... On phone booths, in bathrooms downtown, trash cans, newspaper bins, on walls windows and side walk at first I dint notice now i see t everywhere? is there a spicific resion why this person is doing it? is it a persons tag? or is it an organization? i mean i know how all you indymedia people are about names, im not really interested in meeting the person, im just interested in whats up, since i am an artist not really so muh an activist although am interested in getting into the scene. but wonderd if UNITE RESIST had anything to do with anything....

seen 'em too 27.Oct.2003 22:17

s.e. cyclist

i first started seeing them in feb. 2003 or so, during the ramp up to the attack on iraq. it's my suspicion that a small number of people started it, and that it's since been picked up by others, who probably don't even know the first ones, because it's such a simple and attractive phrase. people post it to the newswire here quite often too, or have, in a kind of electronic graffitti. i think the meaning is simple, and can't be put any better than "unite * resist".

there are other repeating tags/stickers around town, too. you can still find "they peppersprayed babies", which appeared after the aug. 22, 2002 bush protest. more recently, stickers saying "silence is acquiecence" (my spelling mistake, if there is one) have been appearing, too. i like 'em.

i say, make your own tag/stickers/message and start putting it around town. perhaps you'll start seeing it in places where you didn't put it yourself!

UNITE*EVOLVE 28.Oct.2003 01:00

evolutionary

I prefer UNITE*EVOLVE because of its focus on the goal, not the means. I don't like UNITE*RESIST because I am not striving for resistance. I don't want to spend my life fighting and struggling; it is not my goal, but I will resist that which is counter to the goal of evolution (social, political, spiritual, technological, etc).

Just something to think about.

Resistance 28.Oct.2003 11:05

*

Unite*Resist is a meme- a way of thinking, an aesthetic, a philsophical groundwork, a platform for collective action. A bunch of people are doing this to introduce the concept that resistance is NECESSARY, into the generalized counsciousness of portlanders.

There is withdrawl from the structures of authority, and then there is resistance to them, and these are different things. Withdrawl without resistance will result only in an isolated scene of "autonomy" that is essentially elitist, but collective resistance is the responsibility of us all. Resistance means integrity to a vision of freedom and popular empowerment, in the face of all circumstances, by any means necessary. It means that our politics are not a fashion that we put on when we hang out with our activisty friends, but a legitmite and powerful hope for the world as a whole.

Thanks poster named " * " as what you've written is very concise, well written, well thought out, and very TRUE! I'm
like a lot of so-called "activist" that is getting burned out on the passive trail that's seemingly leading nowhere but
to a dead-end. I mean that in more than the mere metaphorical sense too! Like you idea. Hope to see this meme
around town a lot more, and when I do, shall recall what you've written. Thanks!
