government a21 bush protests

The Shrub has landed!

.
10:46 IMC web radio call in, Marchers just passed Menlow and are still walking up Willamette. One big group split off and headed up Menlow. One person was detained by a cop at this corner and the crowd that headed up Menlow are being followed by riot cops. The larger group just reached a barrier on N. Harvard St and Willamette and are being followed by bike cops. Pro-Bush "Love it or Leave it" protesters are on this corner of Harvard and N. Willamette.

10:31.Corner of Willamette and Woolsey: Everyone has left the park, all taking the streets, heading toward the University.
10:32. Portsmouth and Willamette, police presence getting heavier.

10:58 a.m. KBOO call-in: Andrew Steltzer: From Stanford and Willamette: March estimating 2000 folks has marched down Willamette into "protest zone" where there was a metal fence at Willamette & Portlmouth, lined by riot cops lining the fence and the grass. None of the major roads have protesters near Portsmouth and Willamette. Still marchers arriving. March is on the edge of the sidewalk on UP campus. Seems like the main way in is down Willamette from Columbia Park. Many police along the sides of these streets. One protester said he's never been to a protest but now just feels he has gotten fed up... and that this is so much different than it is shown on the t.v. AP reporter refused to estimate crowd. The atmosphere feels celebratory, no real tension at this point.

11:02 Lisa Hamid KBOO call-in: On Willamette in front of U of P several thousand folks, stopped at WIllamette and Stanford, more still arriving. Many incredible signs, ("we wanted tp impeach Clinton for having sex with and intern, are we not going to impeach bush for screwing the constitution.") Many NLG and legal observers in the crowd as well. There was a vietnam vet tauting the cops on the other side of the fence... There was veterans in support being mocked by other vets reminding them that those in Iraq are getting their pay cut...

11:04 Erin at KBOO: returning and okayed by Secret Service, being stopped again at Chiles Center, where a loud group of protesters have gatherd 300 yards or so away in front of the Chiles Center. Secret Service is telling Erin he has to leave.

11:05 KBOO reports that presidential plane has landed and motorcade is heading down WA State Hwy 14 is the travel route and this hwy is now closed.

11:06 KBOO call-in: cheerleaders, drum corp, people coming down willamette blvd, bottlenecked in at Harvard and Willamette. Police in formation around 50-100 along the green behind the fence

I'm trapped at work in an office downtown, but I wish I was with you guys - my wife and daughter should be down there marching with you somewhere!
Last year (downtown) it was easier for us suits to join the kids in the streets - I guess Bush got scared looking out the window of the Hilton to see people with ties on shouting at him, along with the dredlocks and t-shirts!

GET DOWN THERE 21.Aug.2003 11:35
