Virus Spam Alert to All

I think folks should know that there is a fierce virus spam campaign going on. I received 30 emails this morning on an email address I stupidly posted on this board. The spammers somehow make the SENDER a bona fide email address! Like the EPA, NIH, my local newspaper, OHSU, Portland INDYMEDIA (!), and various funky yahoo and hotmail account names.
I have reported this to all these entities and have confirmation from the EPA that they have been hit hard with this and have gotten the virus. I guess when they open the attachment (a 100k PIF file), it must send copies of it out into the internet world. I don't have any business with ANY of these entities.......so it's a pretty amazing spam campaign.

The only way I could have gotten these is from my having posted my email address on this board publicly. So.....beware...... I don't know what I was thinking when I posted it publicly. (And I am certainly not saying anything bad about IMC!)

The subject titles were all things like: Your Details; My details; Here's the Info You Requested; Approved; that Movie; Wicked Screensaver. (Just the standard bull that virus spammers use to get an unsuspecting person's attention so they open the attached file).

EGAD!

Anways.......be very careful opening files.
this is the new SoBig virus 19.Aug.2003 14:42

What you describe sounds like the newest incarnation of the SoBig virus ... popped up just this morning. Unless you've never used your email address anywhere except here, odds are it was harvested from the net by the virus and used as a spoofed return address. There's little anyone can do to protect themselves from that, even if they avoid being infected by the virus itself.

MSNBC has a reasonably good write-up on this at ...
