Blackthorn is a publication focused on the creative spirit inherent in radical DIY culture. Our mission is to create and distribute a paper that reflects the lives we actually live and provides a vehicle for independent thought , which is a reflection of who we are as people.
Despite many obstacles, and financial burdens, blackthorn is still alive. We have come to notice that in our efforts to produce a paper with the goal of inspiring and empowering others, we at times lose our own ability to stay inspired. Renewing energy and moving forward can be a constant struggle and has become a large part of keeping this project going. We choose to not let blackthorn fall by the wayside. With that in mind we are looking for some new collective members; people who are interested in devoting time and energy to publishing on a regular basis. Some basic things this would entail: meeting 2x or more monthly, making contacts with people world wide, bring new ideas to the table, fundraising and setting up/helping with benefits, distribution, mailing and organization, and above all else inspiration.
We have been working together since January 2002, a little burnt out but still enthusiastic. To keep blackthorn fresh and exciting we feel bringing new people and ideas in on a regular basis is essential. We are hoping to hold a meeting with interested people in mid july, so let us know.
Since the inception of blackthorn we have had zero income from the paper. We are advertising free. All of our $ comes from benefits and contributions from people like you. If you can help with setting up a benefit or offering up your space for us to use for a benefit, or would like to donate money for a stack of papers get in touch.
We are also looking for a space to meet and work out of. If you know of on that is cheap or free contact us.
Another wish is for access to a photocopier, a large bed press for woodblocks/etching etc., offset print hook ups, and office/art supplies.
One big project we are starting to work on is that we are putting together a benefit callendar with bikeworks. We are looking for people to contribute art for one of the months that would coincide with an historical event that happened during that month. The art should be one color and easily reproducable and not digital. Contact for size and other pertitant information. Deadline is Sept 1st.
And last but certainly not least we are always in need of submissions and there is no set deadline for these. As a collective we operate primarily as facilitators and layout guides. The majority of the content is sent to us. We are looking for well written/researched articles or interviews that encompass the DIY ethic; also reliable news, your stories and origianl artwork are essential.
A big thank you to all who have supported us in any way shape or form. We hope blackthorn can seem as a strong resource, inspiration, and motivation for the daily struggle.
Hope for the best- blackthorn collective
