"War against Terrorism or Expansion of the American empire"

Renowned author and researcher William Blum Coming to Portland

Portland, OR.- Highly acclaimed author and analyst of American foreign
policy, William Blum, will be coming to Portland to speak on May 31, 2003.
The event will take place at Portland State University in the Smith Center
Ballroom (third floor of the Smith Memorial Center). Doors will open at 6:00
P.M. and the event start time will be at 7:00 P.M.
Immediately following the presentation, Blum will be available to sign
books. There will be a $3 to $5 suggested donation to this event but no one
will be turned away.

Willaim Blum is the author of Killing Hope and Rogue State: A
Guide to the World's Only Superpower, two of the most classic books on
American imperialism of the last thirty years. Together, these two works
comprise a radical and devastating analysis of U.S. foreign policy which
bears particular relevance to the current so-called war on terror. Mr.Blum's
most recent book is entitled West-Bloc Dissident, a memoir of his life and
times as a political activist

William Blum left the State Department in 1967, abandoning his aspiration of
a becoming a foreign service officer, because of his opposition to what the
United States was doing in Vietnam.

He then became one of the founders and editors of the Washington Free Press,
the first "alternative" newspaper in the capital.

In 1969, Blum wrote an expose of the CIA; In 1972-3 he lived in Chile and
witnessed and wrote about the overthrow of the democratically elected
government of Salvador Allende by Nixon, Kissinger and the CIA; In the
mid-1970s he worked with former CIA officer Phillip Agee on a project to
expose CIA personnel and their misdeeds. Blum currently is living in
Washington DC, still writing and researching at the Library of Congress and
the National Archives to strike fear in
to the hearts of US government officials.

The title of William Blum's talk will be "War Against Terrorism or Expansion
of the American Empire?"

Sponsored by The Rearguard, the alternative newspaper at Portland State
University, Students for Unity, Black Cultural Affairs Board and by KBOO
community radio, Portland's only truly progressive and listener sponsored
radio station.
