military vehicles SE 10th & SE Madison

Coming home from the impeach Bush/PPRC march & rally tonight, I spotted a tank on a large flat bed trailer. They started parking it in a lot on the corner of SE 10th & SE Madision. I asked some bystanders about it and they told me that there's going to be some kind of vehicle show tomorrow and they were going to park all the military vehicles at that corner. (Might be good place for a peaceful protest.) I have no idea what hour it'll be -- anyone live nearby who could check this out?

If you call it a 'tank', make sure it really is a tank, not something else. As you'll recall from the long discussion associated with the Eugene drug raid, military nomenclature is a touchy subject right now ... B-)

Tankwatch is standing by 09.May.2003 22:29

TankWatch

Yes. We need to be very clear about what is / isn't a tank. More details please.

A tank by any other name is still a tank. 09.May.2003 22:50

What's metal, large, and looks exactly like a tank?

Hmm. Let's see, how about.....a tank? If there's another way to describe it, I don't know what that is. A large metal vehicle with a big white star on it that looks exactly like a tank? Are there other kinds of tanks that would fit in the category of military vehicles? Would you have been less suspicious if I called it a military tank? I don't know of any other kind of tank that is driveable. If you doubt what I saw, you could go by the lot and take a look at the tank. Maybe you could describe the tank differently by calling it something other than a tank.

how to tell 10.May.2003 01:12

...

The easiest way to tell if something is a tank is if it has a large pipe like thing on top, from which large bullet like things are fired out of. The thing in Eugene looked like a "tank" in that it was big, scary, and metal - but it was "just" an APC (armored personel carrier) becuase it wasn't built to send large projectiles flying from it.

another 'tank' criterion 10.May.2003 02:48

%

a tank has metal caterpillar treads,

*not* conventional wheels with inflatable rubber tires (if so, then it's just an armored car--even if it does have a gun turret).

A clarification: armored personnel carriers [APCs] such as the M113, or the M2 Bradley fighting vehicle--although they do have guns or turrets, and metal caterpillar treads--aren't classified as tanks, because their primary role is transporting a squad of infantry.

M113 armored personnel carrier 10.May.2003 03:09

not a tank

US Army National Guard has a lot of these . . . over 80,000 have been built globally.

this is pretty close to what I saw being parked on the corner of SE 10th & SE Madison last night. The one I saw had a longer gun turret and a big white star on the front.

Yes, and an APC by any other name ... 10.May.2003 09:41

I'm almost sorry I said anything. I was just trying to poke fun at us by drawing an ironic parallel to another thread which generated a LOT of discussion about whether the vehicle in question was really a tank or 'merely' an APC. Although there's a very real difference, it's a little beside the point in this case ... a vehicle on display at a show.

Perhaps we can all agree to call this and similar military rigs 'Self-propelled, armored, possibly treaded, vehicles that may or may not mount a big-assed cannon on top'.

Someone with a better command of the language than me can surely twist that around to form some suitably caustic acronymn.

Or, we could simply call it a tank and to hell with it ... [vbg]

Yep ... that's a tank. Good eye ... [vbg]

For your viewing pleasure ... the SP4449. Much cooler than a tank.

And to make it absolutely clear 10.May.2003 10:26

TankWatch

Since it looks like we need to spell out what is / is not a "tank", I submit this to the record.

This photo does NOT depict a tank. We will call this an "airplane."

You saw a WWII era tank on the corner of SE 10th and Morrison. Was it on the way to a museum? Anybody know if there's a tank show at the Portland Art Museum coming up because WW2 tanks are being spotted downtown.

Good question 10.May.2003 10:53

Perhaps there is a military vehicle display being set up. I'd really like to know, if someone has the information. I readily confess to a childish 'boy toy' fondness for big-ass mechanisms and things that go *bang*.

Unfortunately, searches for 'tanks' in Portland Oregon tend to turn up references to storage containers and super fund sites. Those clever Brits ... when they choose a code name for a secret weapon, it really works ... [vbg]

Car show - 10.May.2003 15:26

I went to my studio early this morning - and stopped by Burgerville for a hot and healthy meal (joke) - and I saw the Tanks in question. There was a vintage car show - lots of oldies and jazzed up new ones - and a whole section devoted to military vehicles. That' s why the tank was there.

Blab Blab Blab.. 11.May.2003 10:39

Whahoo, the Blue Butted Clown

So, if you don't mind me asking what is the point of all this blabbing,
Tank, this, Apc that, why not save your precious tongues on saying something
with meaning, perhaps something that might change the way things war
I personally don't understand what your discussion has to do with anything
PIMC has to stand for.. Mainly changing the face of media...
If you people wanted to do something, why not stage a satyrical play on the
Waterfront about, I don't know, Clowns like Bush and Cheney...
Or better yet, make sure that Bush doesn't get re-elected...
Or perhaps you could sit on your asses all day and complain about the
state of the world and the military vehicles sitting round town,
of which there are many more where that one came from.
Protesting is not all there is, informing people one person at a time,
Taking the time to create dialog, reverting peoples' misconceptions...
and, random acts of Kindness...
This will get you much further than a person wiith a sign, though It's a start.
While you're at it, take a look at the kids in the world around you...
I think they are the ones who are being left out of this whole equation...
I takes one to know one, be a chum.. not a chimp or a chump.
Or for that matter a Lump With A Keyboard!

That's not a tank either. It's an ostrich. Perhaps it's hiding from a tank.

Nope, that's not a tank either ... it's an ostrich.

Still, it may be hiding from a tank ... [vbg]
