Oregon Poets Against the War Publishes Raising Our Voices: An Anthology
Portland, OR - Expected Release Date: June 2003
Oregon Poets Against the War was inspired by the website Poets Against
the War, established by poet and translator Sam Hamill in late January
of 2003. Refusing an invitation to a poetry symposium at the White
House, Hamill instead invited poets to join him in speaking out against
the war by posting poems and statements of conscience to the website.
Within four days, 1,500 poets had responded. When word of this reached
Laura Bush, she cancelled the symposium. Barely a month later, more than
13,000 poems had been submitted to the website—hundreds of them from Oregon.
Poets across the world organized readings in an International Day of
Poetry Against the War on March 5th, 2003. Duane Poncy and Patricia
McLean, of rainy nights press, participated in a reading at the Red &
Black Cafe in Portland organized by local poet and artist Hannah Leah.
This experience has inspired them to publish their first literary book,
_Raising Our Voices_, an anthology of poems submitted by Oregon poets to
the Poets Against the War website.
Raising Our Voices includes nearly 170 poems by more than 130
poets, a foreword by contributors Judith Barrington and Ursula K.
LeGuin, and artwork by contributing poet Roberta Badger. Please see
enclosed samples of poems and excerpt from the foreword.
