For Portland I want to set up the Shock & Awe march for May 14th 2003 to start at Pioneer Square around 5:00pm and march up to the federal building to City Hall at the plaza Where speaches will be made by several activist. Now I am just hoping this is a idea that takes off and is used worldwide.

How about just the speeches only? 28.Apr.2003 15:04

Great idea!! But how about just speeches, no march (saves on permits, shoe leather, cop-watching, etc.. And at Pioneer Square or South Park blocks on a Saturday at 2? Good time for drawing an audience in PDX, we've learned. What speakers, what topics you got in mind? Bush/NACP bashing——hopefully? Howard Dean's speaking in SF May 14, e.g., and his campaign staff also mulling a hop up to PDX. Or round up Martin Sheen, et al. Or some other stemwinders to make Karl Rove nervous.

Speeches are good. 28.Apr.2003 21:14

You are right about setting up marches. too much hassle sometimes. speeches are good, I just don't have enough connections to get some familiar faces up to talk against the war. Thats why I posted here. Hopefully somebody out there has these kinds of connections and can help with the rally...(No longer Shock & Awe march but rally instead)

Go for a strong, focused, overall theme. Suggestion: "Showing Bush the Door in 2004——Starting Now". People will come because as thousands of homemade signs have shown in the big marches since October, they're primed to help toss out this NACP gang.
Get 1 big name like Howard Dean or Earl Blumenauer or Ron Wyden, Vera, etc. to bring folks out and 4 practical Oregonian movers/shakers who are well known like Serena Cruz, e.g., a Young Democrat org type with some hollar-power from PSU/OSU/or UO (wake 'em up down there to get rolling; we've only got 18 months, 9 to the primary). And get the Oregon Democratic office to get out there with registration/campaign literature——and some bumper stickers. Ask around to see who'll do a free music gig to promote the group (nothing says they can't pass the tambourine for expenses). Get that mobile speaker stand that was so great for the April 12 march. Get a couple of folks to get city permits for a rally. Maybe the most imaginative "Beat-Bush" sign contest.
Don't be shy, Arthur. Get on the horn! Folks who are planning to run locally and need exposure are always looking for a crowd. Call Howard Dean's office in Vermont (802-846-6600) and ask them if he can't make a stop out here as the key speaker 'em you——or can send someone who will. Good on you for starting the ball rolling.
