CENSORSHIP!

You pay the bills, you control the content...
I don't really see what all the fuss is about the recent WW article. From what I can tell these people "Deva and spArk" seem to be paying the bills for this site so I have a hard time understanding how their editing the content amounts to censorship. I've posted a lot of my opinions and they were either deleted or hidden but I surely don't see it as "CENSORSHIP!" in any way, shape or form. On the other hand, I've noticed that quite a few of my posts are left intact for discussion, maybe they are left there strictly for amusement purposes. Either way, the content of this site isn't public property so whether you lean to the left or the right this site isn't your property to do with as you please. After all, there is nothing stopping anyone from creating their own Independent Portland News website and then they can be in charge of its content...

Your thoughts are very clear, except that you forget the initial spirit of the site was to foster an open forum. OPen and free are the only way to clear thought.

wow, i actually find myself in agreement with "trilox woodsman"?!? except for his statement about "paying the bills for this site", because no one "pays the bills" for this site, except through their own volunteered time. but as an indymedia operative i strongly believe that this virtual space needs to be kept safe for activists (and future activists) to communicate, learn, change and grow. if you want to change something on portland indymedia, then click the "contact" link and come on down to get involved. or as "trilox woodsman" says you can create a virtual space of your own. there are countless ways to help further the global justice movement, and we need to be fighting on many fronts. don't just be a spectator...LIVE IT!

"except for his statement about "paying the bills for this site", because no one "pays the bills" for this site"

What on earth are you talking about? Of course they pay the bills for this site. Do you think that the Internet is a place where domain name hosting and all-you-eat bandwidth is free? Get real...

I also, on rare occassion, agree with Trilox. At least he is willing to discuss things in an intelligent manner.

Yeah, as soon as he feels his racist zionist anti-american rants are threatened, then he gets reeeally willing to use his brain. Wonder why...

Having a hard time understanding what that means. Can someone explain it to me?

republic of cascadia citizen,

Don't expect me to believe that all of the hosting and bandwidth of this site are paid for by donations from local folks. I've checked out the rates of the host for this site and they ain't cheap...

for "trilox woodsman": you can choose to believe what i say about how this site is run, or you can choose not to. that is what is great about being a free-thinking individual. i happen to be telling you the truth: portland indymedia exists solely through the hard work of volunteers, and donated equipment and bandwidth (yes, some friendly collectives/individuals donate bandwidth!)---a few hundred individuals worlwide promoting mutual aid and support in solidarity with the rising global justice movement.

Trilox writes, "Don't expect me to believe that all of the hosting and bandwidth of this site are paid for by donations from local folks. I've checked out the rates of the host for this site and they ain't cheap..."

Maybe Trilox would like to share the specifics of his research to back up his assertions. Without specifics, it's all smoke.

A little research on my part shows that Portland IndyMedia's ISP charges $34.95 a month minimum for hosting services. That is cheap, although I suspect that IndyMedia pays somewhat more than this due to certain requirements. It should be extremely easy to pay for this out of donations.

I buy hosting services for some lower bandwidth sites for *$49 a year*, including domain name, unlimited e-mail accounts, mailman lists, etc.

Don't be ridiculous. This site gets hundreds if not thousands of hits daily, which would clearly result in more than $34.95 a month. The bandwidth alone is probably $34.95 a day. Needless to say, I'm sure some covert communist organization with lots of slush fund money pays the bills anyway...

Mr. Trilox, the Cyber Expert wrote, "The bandwidth alone is probably $34.95 a day." Prior to that, he said, "I've checked out the rates of the host for this site and they ain't cheap...."

Trilox, did you check the rates or didn't you? I think that you didn't check the rates because you don't have the first clue as to how to do it.

I submit that this site has a plan with "unlimited" monthly data throughput. Prove me wrong. Facts will be helpful.

Thank you... 24.Apr.2003 23:47

I like that handle better anyway...

What's funny is that this site has run with absolutely NO money for quite a while. Thanx for the props though Trilox. Guess we're doing something right.

The site is really maintained on volunteers and donations. It is just that simple.

However, this does raise the question of whether or not the pope is really paying for all the catholic churches in the world. I knew there was a conspiracy...people don't just volunteer, donate and work towards something. These are the United Steaks of Americer god damn it!
