You Have a Right To Adultery
Republican Senator Rick Santorum's proclaims "you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything."

Rights. right! 22.Apr.2003 11:40

Rick Santorum seems to have misunderstood the concept of "rights." That is a worse offense than what he actually said.

Neither incest nor adultery are consensual acts (at least, adultery as commonly defined is not consensual with the person who is excluded from the tryst.) Therefore, it can't possibly be in the same league with consensual homosexual encounters.

Whether polygamy should enjoy the status of a "right" depends on the culture. But it has at least the potential (rarely realized, I would guess) of being consensual.

Rights generally are understood as individual rights-- "your fist ends where my nose begins." It is hard to talk about "rights" when applied to larger groups--like "homosexuals" or "bigamists" for the obvious reason that two people doing the same thing may do it for very different reasons. And then it just becomes politics.

hmmm ... 22.Apr.2003 11:50

There's a real career-enhancing sound bite.

What he said is that if a court rules that consenting adults have the "right" to engage in sodomy in their home, then they have the "right" to do all those other things mentioned in the PARTIAL QUOTE you supplied. In other words, he's saying that if homosexuality is okay, then anything is okay; (I'm surprised he didn't include bestiality and human sacrifice on his nefarious list).

What we have here is the epitome of a hateful, right-wing bigot. Another fine representative of the Republican party. But by giving only half the quote, you gave the opposite impression.

Try and be more careful and honest when posting to the newswire.
