Canadian ambassador meets Jewish MP

Tehran, April 20, IRNA -- Canadian Ambassador to Iran Philip McKinon met here Sunday with the Jewish representative in the Majlis, Morris Motamed.
The Majlis Cultural and Public Relations Department said that Motamed referred to the 2,700 years of Jewish presence in Iran.
He also discussed religious minorities' economic, social and religious activities, notably those of the Jews in the country.
He alluded to the reform process in Iran, adding fortunately with the support of the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mohammad Khatami many of the issues concerning the Jews have been resolved and 'they are participating in various activities in the society just like other religious minorities'.
Iran, throughout its history, has been a model for other countries in the coexistence among its ethnic and religious minorities as can be seen in the relations between Jews and their Muslims brethren.
The Canadian ambassador also expressed satisfaction over his visit to the Majlis and said that these discussions are good steps for better mutual understanding and removing any misunderstandings between religious groups.
During his previous visit to the Majlis in March, McKinon held talks with Deputy Speaker Mohammad-Reza Khatami on ways to develop Tehran-Ottawa relations.
Mohammad-Reza Khatami expressed pleasure over growing relations between Iran and Canada and hoped that these ties would develop in all areas.
He called for economic cooperation between Iran and Canada including joint investment and said all political parties are unanimous about economic development and transfer of technology through investment.
He said that Iran attaches great importance to relations with Canada and called for development of cooperation between the Iranian and Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the academic centers.
McKinon said that he was pleased with mutual cooperation in the field of oil and gas adding that the Canadian firms are keen on investment in oil, gas and other industrial sectors.
