April 2003- We can make our demonstrations more effective by sharpening our skills as activists! For this purpose, organizers from Media Island and the Olympia Community FreeSkool have put together The Activist Toolkit: Demonstration Series. Facilitators include Black Cross (PDX), Attorney Paul Richmond (Seattle), and Olympia CopWatch. Workshops are Non-Violent Direct Action and Legal Observer (A13), Street Medic (A19), Critical Mass! Skillshare (A22), and Know Your Rights!(A29)

The conception behind this series is to bring activists from different together to learn together, network, and build community while improving their skills to make their work more effective.

The Activist Toolkit: Demonstration Workshop Series
Non-Violent Direct Action and Legal Observer Workshops
Date: Sunday, April 13th, 2003
Location: Traditions 300 5th Ave SW, Downtown Olympia, WA
Check in: 9:30-10am
Non-Violent Direct Action Workshop 10:00-4:00 (NVDA limited to 25 participants)
Training in theory, practice, and process of non-violent direct action.
We will begin with theoretical model through affinity group basics. We will give explanation of the affinity group- roles, decision-making forms-consensus and active decision-making. We will accomplish this mostly through direction, discussion, and role-play.
Legal Observer Training 4:30-6:30 (limited to 45 participants)
Legal Observer is another name for "Witness."
The workshop will focus on tactics for observing police at demonstrations.
Videographers: Bring video cameras if you have them.
Legal Observer Facilitator: Paul Richmond, has more than a decade of experience tracking police misconduct, coordinated of legal support around the WTO, author of the report Waging War on Dissent and a Producer and Consultant on the documentary Urban Warrior.
STREET MEDIC TRAINING (limited to 45 participants)
Date: Saturday April 19th 9:30am-6:00pm
Location: The Evergreen State College Longhouse
Facilitators: Black Cross Health Collective (Portland, OR) and Olympia area medics
Co-sponsored by Evergreen Political Information Center
Check-in and breakfast: 9:30am Workshop: 10:00am-6:00pm
Suggested Donation: Sliding scale $0-$40 Monies go to further the work of Black Cross.
The 8-hour workshop is intended as an introduction to protest first aid and aftercare. It will prepare the student to be an affinity group-level medic. Open to people with no experience and those with established skills.
You will learn: Basic protest safety for you and your affinity group Chemical weapons (pepper spray) decontamination, Herbal remedies and aftercare ABCs (Scene survey, scene management, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, spinal cord precautions, triage)
YOU MUST: Dress as if you were going to a protest. Sensible shoes and raingear required; we may get you wet. Bring all the other gear you'd bring if you were going to a protest including a small, UNOPENED sealed squirt-top water bottle, your lunch and snacks. Bring your friends.

Critical Mass! Skillshare (limited to 25 participants)
Date: Tuesday April 22nd 6:30pm
Location: Le Voyeur (in the back room), 404 4th Ave Olympia, WA
Come share your ideas and experiences as participants in critical mass demonstrations. Like to bike but never been in a critical mass? Join us for a facilitated discussion on safety and strategy.
Know Your Rights Workshop (limited to 30 participants)
Date: Tuesday April 29th 7pm
Location: Media Island, 816 Adams Street, Downtown Olympia, WA
Facilitators: Olympia Copwatch
Workshop will cover legal rights individuals have and provide activists with strategies for dealing with the police.
The Olympia Community FreeSkool is a Skillshare and Free Education Network, based on the pedagogy of popular education. Anyone is welcome to come take a class or facilitate a class with us!
