imperialism & war

What does killing Iraqis have to do with freedom or democracy?

Maybe you should ask the oppresed people of Iraq.
Maybe you should ask the oppressed people of Iraq.

When we break a law protesting in the good old USA we get a hand slap or fine then we are back on the street.

In Iraq if you protest the government you get killed.

If you refuse to fight for your government in the good old USA you might spend time in the brig or move to Canada.

In Iraq they hold your family take your sons and keep a death squad close by so that if you try to surrender you die anyway.

Sure the rich get richer in the Good old USA. Truth is if you want to be rich go for it plenty of people do every year. Where in the world can you go and make millions playing children's games.

If a person in Iraq wants to be rich they better be a son of a government leader. Women and Kurds are out of luck.

We will now see if Iraq can be a free country where everyone has a chance to get ahead. Without Saddam Hussein using mustard gas on people within his borders because they are not of his faith. With the food for oil relief plan back in place and the food going to the rank and file instead of the Iraqi troops people will see a chance for a better life.

There will always be anti American groups in the world we have one less to worry about now. Sure there are Iraqi's that are not happy to see Saddam go but from what I have seen today most are dancing on his grave and cheering for the first freedom they have had in 25 years.

I am sorry for the loss of innocent lives, if our ancestors had not fought for our freedoms we would be singing God save the Queen, or worse marching in brown shirts in a world devoid of cultural diversity. (no Jews Blacks or people of color)

Amen to that...

Its great to see all this starting to come to a close, both the war and Saddam's regime. I see one of our carriers is already on its way home. Hopefully my friends and all the rest of our troops will be following shortly.

Hold on a minute 09.Apr.2003 14:59

I thought we went to war because of WMD, what happened to the WMD? That was what the war was all about, remember?

Oh... We didn't find anything, did we?

Well, we can't very well say we fucked the place up and killed all those people for nothing.

I got it.
We'll say the war was to FREE IRAQ! What a slogan!

Hey, wait a minute. What about our other friends like the Saudis who are under even worse than Saddam? It seems like we would free our friends first.

Oh well...

A year ago we freed Afganistan and and look how well they're doing! Hmmm... Maybe that's not a good example.

WMD=Saddam 09.Apr.2003 15:23

Bush said we were going in (at first) for WMD - his words changed - when he saw the people of the world were against his war - then it changed to free Iraq - so whatever -

As far as I'm concerned - Saddam was a weapon of mass destruction - so mission accomplished

I spoke with my Kurd friend again today - he had tears in his eyes - he was so happy.

WMD 09.Apr.2003 16:16

Freedom???

No, I clearly heard repeatedly that we were going for the WMD that were going to supply all the terrorists who are the constant threat to ALL Americans. (Have you reported your neighbors strange comings and gings yet?) Suddenly it's "liberation" and "freedom".

There are many bad leaders and les-than perfect democracies (hey...the US isn't a democray--please look up PLUTOCRACY in the dictionary). Last I checked, being a dictatoror bad leader is (was?) not a reason to attack in an unprovoked manner....

At this rate, King George II can keep this up for a long time and keep attention away frrom the fact that our own economy has crumbled and isn't coming back soon.

ok 09.Apr.2003 16:44

ok

Saddam is evil.. plain and simple..
luckily for us, he is weak.
Saddam does treat his people like crap that is a fact. I think it's fishy that we're trying to stop a rogue leader and save the innocent people by bombing them. Don't forget that the civilians of iraq that survive will probally become one of the 10 million estimated to starve. good job.
If you really want to save innocent people... do something about the ethnic cleansing in yugoslovia. Remember the phrase "never again".

Bush is a weapon of mass destruction 09.Apr.2003 18:05

Auntie Christy

Bush himself is a weapon of mass destruction.
Maybe some foreign regime will start inspections in the U.S.

So what. I don't recall hearing any antiwar voices in Portland saying Saddam is a great guy or that he runs (ran?) a model democracy. Sure, Iraq under Saddam had a horrid human rights record. That's not the point.

The point is that the USA is a much greater threat to world peace. Nothing a third-world tyrant can do in breaking international law is as harmful to world peace as when the most powerful and influential nation in the world does so. Also, the USA has far more (and more dangerous) weapons than Saddam ever had.

There just simply is not a 1:1 correspondence between a nation's internal human rights record and its threat to world peace. Sorry.

And if you think that Iraq is about to become a democracy now that the USA has kicked Saddam out of power, there's this bridge across the East River they're selling and I can let you have it for a song.

yes, things were reportedly terrible under Saddam. But what makes you think that this will change under the next military dictator we install there? Do you not remember that we installed Saddam in the first place?
