The United States is "suprised" that some countries are upset about US companies being awarded with reconstruction bids. Suprising? We, the people, pay for the demolition and they, the government, stimulate the economy with a little friendly cronyistic masturbation. What are the odds that businesses that have absolutely NO affiliation with anyone in the government are going to get those bids? Hmmm... let me guess.
Today it struck me as to what may be going on. Bush might just possibly feel that he is doing something good. It is just quite possible, in a twisted way, that he feels that clasping American hands around Iraq's oil wells and Hussein's neck at the same time will be good for America. It definitely won't be good for the world, but then again, hey, he wasn't elected [you could end it here] president of the world, only our quaint little country.
Think about it.
Hussein- well, the Bushes hate him. He's probably not the kind of guy you want your daughter dating. But then what head of state is? He's a figurehead for "evil", the kind of evil Bush envisions, anyway. Hussein's cutting would be a staunch symbol in Bush's crusade.
Iraq's oil- they've definitely got a shitload. Everywhere you turn you see the media proclaiming "It's Not About Oil, Stupid!", and then they proceed to talk about nothing but oil. Peter Jennings had a moment the other night when he condescendingly explained to the viewing public what the "No Blood For Oil" buttons implied. This was done with exceeding scoff. The very next thing he had to do was explain why it was absolutely imperative, was in fact built into the strategy of the military maneuvers, to take control of the oil wells in Iraq. He began to splutter and stammer towards the end of this as he tried to reconcile the conclusion that all come to who think even briefly about the topic. Anyway, America needs fucking oil and we need it NOW! Our entire economy is based on it. Have you seen the trucks going down the highways? That's our economy in a nutshell. What good is it to make a product and then have it sit outside the factory until someone walks by and picks it up, lugging it back home? It is about oil, smarty.
Terrorism- the wild card. This is the part that Bush is using to help power the muscles that wave the flags. Too bad he didn't listen to all of his "intelligence" agencies when they told him this was probably the worst thing he could do for the "war" against terrorism. Knee-jerk reactions, anyone? Why yes, I think we'll have our government indulge in a few.
Everything clicked today for me. Bush thinks he's pulling a coup de grace- like the guy who gets excited and bets everything when he's got a straight flush. Tough to beat a straight flush! Too bad this poker game's bigger than the deck Bush thought he was playing with. Lives are at stake and thousands have already died because of political whimsies. Bush is thinking: a toppled Hussein, oil in our back pockets (that 70's oilfield technology's a waste! I heard some guy say on NPR) and the war on terrorism moving right along. Straight Flush for the cokehead... and bodybags for the people at home.
