USWAR/Basra siege broken, reports say
Shalamcheh, Khuzestan prov, March 26, IRNA -- Reports show that the defenders of Basra, the second major Iraqi city, have managed to break the siege of the American and British troops.
In recent days, the US-UK forces in repeated attempts to reach Basra by crossing the bridges extending over the Tigris river had to withdraw in the face of stiff resistance by Iraqi defenders.
According to information released by reliable sources on Wednesday afternoon the US and British troops are deployed to launch several attacks on Basra.
Basra was also hit by air raids, missile attacks and artillery fire of the coalition forces on Wednesday morning.
The city of Basra with a population of 1.2 million has been
spending the three past days without water and power supplies. Its citizens, who have been denied access to fresh water, use river water instead.
