PUBLIC SCOPING MEETING ON TANK WASTE AT HANFORD SITE

come tongiht, wed., 19th, to the hanford public scoping meeting to prepare an environmental impact statement for retrieval, treatment, and disposal of tank waste and closure of single-shell tanks at the hanford site!
WE NEED YOU TO BE THERE!!!!!
Do we want Hanford to become a sacrifice zone, which would in effect endanger the river for future generations of humans and biota?

The following is an announcement from Hanford Office of River Protection about an upcoming hearing/scoping on the plans/alternatives to treating the waste in the 177 Hanford tanks and closing the tanks. It is of utmost importance for you, the public to attend this scoping process so that we,
the citizens of the region, can give our input as to how this Environmental Impact Statement should be developed. This is the front end of the process so that we can determine what issues are covered in the plans' proposals. If you have any questions, please email us or call me in the evenings at 503-232-0848.

Some of the plans are to vitrify (glassify) 30% of the waste in the tanks and deal with some of the remaining percent of the waste through supplemental technologies including the old, publicly discarded idea of grout (putting waste in cement), reclassifying waste so that it can be handled differently, and leave much of the waste in the tanks and walk away.

I will be writing more comments on this for all of us to consider before the public meeting so that we can ask informed questions and give informed comments.

Sincerely, Paige Knight, President, Hanford Watch
