Attacks on our environmental "bill of rights," rollbacks of protection for threatened species, plans to log roadless areas...the list of threats to our wild forests are growing. Instead of getting depressed, we're going to HAVE FUN
- and send a strong message to the Forest Service-
The US Forest Service is planning to log thousands of acres of wild, roadless forests - but Americans overwhelmingly want them protected. In addition to attempting to run-around the popular Roadless Area Protection Rule, and scrapping environmental safeguards, the Bush Forest Service is targeting sensitive, fire-affected roadless forests.
In particular, this is a critical time for Siskiyou Wild Rivers forests - a preliminary decision for whether to propose "salvage" logging in tens of thousands of acres of fire-affected, roadless forests is expected within two weeks.
Come show your support for roadless area protection at this fun, family-friendly rally. We'll have giant valentine cards, forest-protection candy hearts (inscribed with messages like: "Roadless Love" and "Forests 4 Ever"), and several daring souls dressed as cupids! We'll hear about threats to roadless forests, advocate for protection, and present a pile of valentines to the Forest Service!
Bring your friends! Bring a sweetheart! Express your love for Siskiyou forests!
WHAT: Have a Heart Rally
WHERE: US Forest Service Region 6 HQ (333 SW First Ave. in Portland - on the MAX line)
WHEN: 12:30-1:30pm on Thursday, Feb. 13th (the day BEFORE Valentine's Day)
BRING: A valentine to express your love for roadless forests and red or pink clothes to wear!
CARD & SIGN MAKING:
There will be a free card and sign-making workshop at Portland State University's Smith Center, room M103 starting at 6:00 PM TONIGHT (Tuesday, Feb. 11th). If you're making your own cards or signs, some phrases for inspiration are below:
"We love Siskiyou Forests"
"No more 'sweetheart' deals for the logging industry"
"Love our wild forests - don't log them"
"Save Siskiyou Roadless Forests"
"Forest protection, not 'salvage' logging"
This is one of many "have a heart" events happening all over the country. If you can't make the rally (or if you're feeling action-oriented) you can visit http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/loveroadless to send a valentine message to the Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth. If you send a message, remember to mention protection for fire-affected Siskiyou Wild Rivers forests!
