February 15: An Anarchist Call for Global Action against Capitalism and War

An international anarchist call for direct actions on February 15th against capitalism and war.

February 15: An Anarchist Call for Global Action against Capitalism and War

The ongoing war between the United States, the United Kingdom and Iraq is only one component of a global struggle between the rich and powerful and the billions who are oppressed for their benefit. Blair and Bush, like bin Laden and Hussein, use the politics of international war as a diversion from their wars against the poor, the excluded, and the Earth.

From the West Bank to the West Side, and from the rainforests of Colombia to the farmlands of Great Britain, the ruling class maneuvers to extract the maximum profits from the Earth and its people. International war is one more tactic in this class war, for the acquisition of natural resources, the elimination of surplus populations, and the consolidation of patriotic unity between the oppressors and the oppressed.

On February 15, 2003, millions around the globe will march in opposition to the escalation of this war. We call on all who seek a world free of the oppression of authoritarianism, capitalism, ethnic hatred and religious fundamentalism to participate in this unprecedented mobilization, through convergences in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Aotearoa, Athens, Bangkok, Barcelona, Belfast, Berlin, Berne, Brussels, Budapest, Cairo, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, Edmonton, Glasgow, Helsinki, Istanbul, Jakarta, Johannesburg, London, Lisbon, Madrid, Manila, Montreal, New York, Oslo, Paris, Prague, Ramallah, Rome, San Francisco, San Juan, Sao Paulo, Skopje, Stockholm, Sydney, Tallinn, Tokyo, Toronto, Vienna, Warsaw, and anywhere else, and to escalate this component of the struggle against the ruling class through direct action, including strikes, sabotage, sickouts, occupations, civil disobedience, and the mass reclamation of public space. Let's make our resistance to war visible in as many ways as possible!

From London and New York to Cairo and Ramallah, our resistance will be as global as their oppression. On February 15, to the streets! And to the barricades!

No war between states! No peace between classes!

PDX Protest? 04.Feb.2003 12:08

All right. What are the organizers of the past Portland rallies doing for Feb. 15? Nothing? Has the local peace community already shot its collective wad, or have I just missed the latest e-mail?

If the organizers can't get it together for Feb. 15 (or any other day this month) let's simply all meet in the South Park Blocks at noon on the Ides of February and do it all again. Forget about the police permits and let's do what needs to be done.

The revolution will not be televised (or organized).

So if anything actually does happen on Feb. 15th here, we need to get the word out enough to get people motivated. Like it or not, there are lots of people out there who just won't go out of their way to attend a protest if it doesn't look like it's being endorsed by anyone, or for that matter organised. If we all 'just meet at noon in the park blocks' there's going to be a hundred or less... and that would suprise me. I have very little access to anything that would help, but how hard could it be for us all to get together and pitch in a couple bucks each for flyers? And then, of course we'd need a staple gun and we'd need to be willing to litter the town with them. I'm with you guys for Feb. 15th... but I think it's time for us to actually do something about it ourselves instead of 'just meeting in the park blocks' or waiting for someone else to pipe up who actually has the funds and resources for getting the word out. So, drop me a line, let's actually get this right. Because if we don't, the world will think that our "one big protest" was all we were willing to do.

I'm kind of new to this organizing shit, but what can I do to help? Anyone know what happened to the group that did the feeder marches? We can't all just be planning to sit on our asses.

The main thing is to just decide to be there, and tell others. It'll work. Feb. 15 at noon in the Park Blocks. Hell, I haven't heard, seen or read anything about a PDX rally this month. And that's ridiculous.

Even a few thousand people would make the point. All we need is for the anarchists, black blockers, and real socialists to form the core -- like the crowd from the Jan. 18 North Blocks assembly -- and rest will take care of itself.

I mean what is happening here? Did the Portland Peaceful Response Coalition and all the rest figure they've done their work? My God, Bush is going to pull the trigger this month or next unless a friggin' miracle happens. I don't know about anyone else, but I want to say I was out in the streets denouncing the bastards when the shit hit the fan.

Anyone got a better idea?

The more liberal groups are encouraging people to do decentralized actions throughout the city, in their neighborhoods, in downtown, in Tigard, whatever. What that means is that this is a double edged sword: it means radical folks in Portland have the opportunity to put together a nice action without peace-cop interference. However, it also means that the police will not think twice about kicking some ass. With that in mind, I think that noon at the Park blocks is as good a place to start as any.
