silly name 16.Dec.2002 04:50

me

uh...wierd choice of name. could you be a little more obscure?

the name 16.Dec.2002 09:54

ack ack

Little Beirut was the name given to Portland by the first Bush due to the aggressive demos against his regime during the gulf war particularly when he dared to show his face in our city. I think its funny and it gives us something to live up to. Let no president ever visit Portland with anything less than the same opinion! I think it also gives a sense of solidarity with intense struggle for freedom and self determination.

suggestion for first issue 16.Dec.2002 17:39

myself and i

I would like to suggest giving free lifetime subscriptions to both George Hideous Warmonger Bush and his bad seed son George Warlord Bush.

you could even devote a section of the first issue to inviting both of these aberrations back to Portland for another glimpse of how we feel about them in Little Beirut.

best of luck to the publication!

no history 16.Dec.2002 19:52

lebanese

The title Little Beirut is cute . . . if your history stops at Bush's comment about Portland. But if you learn about what America, Israel, and Syria did to Beirut, you might not think it an appropriate title. Bush's use of this term was incredibly cynical. To relate the protest he received in Portland to the human carnage, chaos, destruction of Beirut and the proxy wars fought there, betrays Bush's (known) disregard for human life. It belittled and scoffed at the experience of Lebanese families. Bush experienced a protest from a distance, Lebanese families experienced terror, massacre, murder, snipers, bombings, deprivation, and civil war for years.

I support the call for articles to your publication. But I wish a deeper historical sense can be brought to the discussion of title. Deeper in the sense of asking, where do these words come from? Who owns them? What did they mean? What does it betray? What does it reveal?

too cute, indeed 16.Dec.2002 20:43

reads history too

Yes, it's too cute by half. And thoughtless. And adopts Bush Senior's trivialization of massacre. Here's a picture of Sabra for those of you who missed it twenty years ago. But this is what Bush was referring to, and it should be remembered, not trivialized by youth magazines.

The PDX Art & Rev that formed after the WTO disbanded about a year ago. (There may be another out there, I s'pose.)

CAT can be found in the phone book, and I'm sure they'd love to be contacted. (And they're a group for renters, not for mores or philosophies.)

We also want you to WRITE OUR NEWSPAPER!
and maybe DO OUR HOMEWORK, too.

This could all be accomplished with a simple list of addresses, published once, and by access to a phone book. That's your "newspaper." Then what?

anglophiles do europa 19.Dec.2002 20:44

tonantzin

Dear Little Beruits,
Let me guess...you are all of european descent, a ton and a half of metal hangs from your faces, your bodies are a bastardized version of tribal tattoos, your hair is matted in ropes of hair to suggest that you stand in solidarity with the Rasta brothas (as if you knew,)you conserve the earth's dwindling water resources by rarely taking a bath, none of you grew up in barrios or black ghettos, your query list for article resources contains NOTHING multicultural because it never has to occur to you that perhaps it should, and, here you are, set to launch yet another very, very tired anglophile rag that rehashes the same old solomonzinnopbgranola twentysomething angst horseshit.

Haven't we had enough?

why 15.Feb.2003 01:10

blah

everybody needs to stop complaining about the name of the paper and read it. The title that appears on the front of the paper is of least importance of to what is inside.

Oh and by the way. It's a great name. If Bushy Sr wants to call us that oh well, great, like it was said before, lets make every president feel that way about portland.

Also, if you stop complaining you will probably be a happier person.
