Meet The New Boss

MEET THE NEW BOSS

"What if they gave a war and no one came."--60s peace slogan

What if they gave us terror
and no one was afraid
or they told us more lies
and no one believed them

What if they said
how different we are
and all we could see
was our common humanity

What if they held an election
and no one voted
or they increased our taxes
and we didn't pay taxes at all

What if they gave us more meaningless jobs
and no one took them
or they advertised Christmas
and no one bought anything

What if they showed us bigger brighter
movies and TV and no one watched
or they exclaimed 'You must have this thing'
and we gave ourselves the peace we crave

What if they insisted we horde and isolate behind
mortgaged walls and we had a pot luck in our streets
or they shouted the new 'Sexus' will make us happy
but we valued the wind on our face far more

What if they commanded 'Climb up and up'
and we all went down into the valleys
to celebrate life itself

trivialization 07.Nov.2002 01:20

to who:

what a brilliant response to the above poem (not); obviously, you didn't read it or get it; everyone loves to just trivialize stuff and reduce it to the lowest common denominator so much, that it's no wonder the 'old boss' still has us by the throat... to the writer of the poem: it made me think about the ways I cosign the socio-economic disaster we call a free society. thanks

By "everyone," you must mean all the whiny little cheerleader voices inside your muffinhead. Take this, wuss.

"Meet the new boss" is from the lyrics of a rock song by the band "The Who", and the next line in the lyrics says "Same as the old boss".

It's in the last 30 seconds of the song.

Lighten up fer' chris' sake! I'm a french and I _even_ know that, so what about you US'istas :-)

Cedd et. al.

"Who's Next" 1970, the song, "Won't Get Fooled Again," so what exactly is your idiot point; you missed mine by a mile, and continue to make it for me. Thanks. The point is reducing everything to an easily referenced and categorized soundbyte to fit inside your walnut sized brain, i.e., taking the above poem and boiling it down to half a line in a song recorded 22 years ago.

And that's a comment! On what? I abide by my original message.

As Frank Zappa would say: "Shut up and play your guitar." At least the above poet is doing that. What about you?

Sorry, my comment wasn't the right thing to do, and I take the responsibility for being a bonehead. You were right. I didn't read the full poem and my reaction was quick, without really thinking about the ramification (and wasn't a comment on the poem itself).

"Baba O'Riley" is the name of the song, although most people get the name wrong.

Smile and move on..... Turn your attention and kicking to more important issues. Even though my comment was insensitive, I'm not the most worthy target of your attention.

THE WHO LYRICS

"Won't Get Fooled Again"

We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?

There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
