Byrd now quoting Goering : "naturally the country does not want war.."

If your going to listen to one speach from Senate this is it it on NPR
for a few hours
Byrd is now quoting from Goering:

"Naturally the country doesn't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE
LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.

That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism
and exposing the country to danger. It works the
same in any country."

"Herman Goering,
convicted war criminal,
1935"

"the only reference to the Constitution (out of the Iraqi war resolution) was 'it has served us well...."

"HAS served us well...'

he is still speaking as 3:12

He didnt quote Goering exactly

This was found easily using Google, just had to try more than one phrase to search on (since the posted quote is partly misquoted).

Found on  http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/shawking/Mike.html

"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should
some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war
when the best he can get out of it is to come back to
his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't
want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for
that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after
all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the
policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the
people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist
dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist
dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always
be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy.
All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked,
and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and
exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any
country." --Hitler's #2 Man, Hermann Goering

Just for clarification... Byrd's remarks were in reference to the similarity of Republican war powers rationalizations, to the fascist's position. Byrd certainly was not adopting, emulating or extolling Goering's views, in any way.

His remarks about the Constitution were re: "Homeland Security" documentation. He was quoting the only, casual, passing, and un-capitalized reference to the Constitution in that 30+ page document. Byrd was pointing this out as being a poignant indication signifying the profound lack of regard for the Constitution on the part of the Bush Administration.

The document as a whole is indeed a Constitutional travesty, in the same vein as the unprecedented war powers legislation, and he spoke on those topics extensively.

Byrd orated brilliantly, passionately, coherently, explicitly, and at great length, despite being 85 years old. He was really ripping the Republicans good, and I loved it. That old man really rocks!
,
Over 100 Democrats joined him in voting against the war powers legislation. I think they deserve a lot of respect for the heat they are taking for opposing the actions of their colleagues and the Administration. I tend to prefer even a dog of a Democrat, over a pig of a Republican, any day! They are not all "the same" as the Republicans.

All of the heinous attacks against justice, humanity and the planet tend to originate with the Republicans. Many of the Democrats have put their careers and even their lives on the line, more or less, to resist such trends. You will recall, it was Democrats who were targeted by the anthrax attacks, post 9/11.

It seems to me that the main problem with Democrats is the extent to which many of them do tend to emulate and cave in to the Republicans. I say arrest all the Republicans and seize their assets, and then the Democrats will be a lot more reliable and easier to deal with.

Anyway, the tape of Byrd's speech will no doubt be rebroadcast. It was an historic classic. CSPAN rules!
