Byrd's Last Stand

His final two hours in the debate.
I believe he has two hours. It's his last shot, and all he has left now is a massive attempt to SHAME the U.S. Senate into not pressing forward.

He's not going to succeed, but it's going to be one Hell of a speech.

That's what Byrd said his office has received in five days, urging him to fight for more debate.

Byrd is now quoting from Goering:

"Naturally the country doesn't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along,
whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.

That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism
and exposing the country to danger. It works the
same in any country."

"Herman Goering,
convicted war criminal,
1935"

(as typical the argument wasn't couched in terms of
anti-war but of the constitution)

"the only reference to the constitution (out of the Iraqi war resolution) was 'it has served us well...."

"HAS served us well...'

Gramps

This is/was without any doubt whatsoever, Byrd's finest hour. It takes genuine guts to openly connect the doctrines of Bush and Hitler on the Senate floor. This may be a swan song for the 85 year old legislator, but it should be a clarion wake up call for anyone who retains any faith in the ideals inherent in the Constitution.

If there is any heart at all left in the Democratic Military/Corporate Party, we can only hope they will rally around this excoriation of the Bush Junta and draw some new life from Byrd's example.

See you in the streets.

James Madison

God bless The Honorable Senator Byrd for not letting the Constitution and the rule of law go down without a fight. He's given us an example of courage and honor to live up to in the dark days ahead of us. Our only recourse now is in the streets. Yeah I'll see ya there Gramps, for as long as it takes. Remember the Philippines, remember Argentina, remember Venezuela. The barrel of a gun is only one of the places power comes from. Sometimes it comes from the look in people's eyes When enough of them stand in the street and say no.
