PPRC Condemns Ariel Sharon's Latest Massacre in Gaza, Calls for Mobilization Against Bush's War
The PPRC's weekly rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Friday, October 11th, at 5:00 p.m., will again focus on the conflict in Israel/Palestine and the desperate last-minute efforts to stop the Bush Administration's drive for war on Iraq.
"We're heartened by the massive show of opposition that we saw on Saturday at the march and rally for peace here in Portland," said Mikel Clayhold of the PPRC. "We're also very glad to hear that most of Oregon's representatives have finally come out strongly and clearly against Congressional authorization for this criminal war." Over 9,000 people from all over Oregon and Southwest Washington took part in a march and rally against the war on Iraq. The Saturday demonstration was the largest that Portland has seen in more than ten years.
"In spite of this outpouring of opposition, and in spite of calls to our representatives running ten-to-one and even one hundred-to-one against this war, Bush is hell-bent on dragging our country into a catastrophic and bloody conflict in the Middle East," said Clayhold. "We need only consider the tragic events this week in Gaza to see the future that this policy holds for us."
This week more than a dozen Palestinians were killed, and nearly one hundred grievously injured by an Israeli helicopter gunship attack using air-burst anti-personnel missiles on a large crowd. Within days, Palestinian militants responded by attacking settlers in a vehicle, wounding several Israelis.
"The Bush administration has provided not even the most flimsy excuse for his decision to attack Iraq," said Chris Roehm of the PPRC. "Each day the reasons he cites change, and each reason is less plausible than the last." This week the Bush administration suggested that Iraq was providing support for al Qaeda, a charge that had been discredited by this same administration shortly after the September 11 attacks.
"Even people working within our country's intelligence services, and among weapons experts working for government agencies, are pointing out that Bush is deliberately and recklessly twisting facts in order to sell this monstrous plan for war," said Roehm. "And the most outrageous part of this criminal policy is that it is virtually certain that a prime reason for the war is to distract the public from issues that would hurt the Republicans in the November elections."
