PPRC Condemns Ariel Sharon's Latest Massacre in Gaza, Calls for Mobilization Against Bush's War

The PPRC's weekly rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Friday, October 11th, at 5:00 p.m., will again focus on the conflict in Israel/Palestine and the desperate last-minute efforts to stop the Bush Administration's drive for war on Iraq.

"We're heartened by the massive show of opposition that we saw on Saturday at the march and rally for peace here in Portland," said Mikel Clayhold of the PPRC. "We're also very glad to hear that most of Oregon's representatives have finally come out strongly and clearly against Congressional authorization for this criminal war." Over 9,000 people from all over Oregon and Southwest Washington took part in a march and rally against the war on Iraq. The Saturday demonstration was the largest that Portland has seen in more than ten years.

"In spite of this outpouring of opposition, and in spite of calls to our representatives running ten-to-one and even one hundred-to-one against this war, Bush is hell-bent on dragging our country into a catastrophic and bloody conflict in the Middle East," said Clayhold. "We need only consider the tragic events this week in Gaza to see the future that this policy holds for us."

This week more than a dozen Palestinians were killed, and nearly one hundred grievously injured by an Israeli helicopter gunship attack using air-burst anti-personnel missiles on a large crowd. Within days, Palestinian militants responded by attacking settlers in a vehicle, wounding several Israelis.

"The Bush administration has provided not even the most flimsy excuse for his decision to attack Iraq," said Chris Roehm of the PPRC. "Each day the reasons he cites change, and each reason is less plausible than the last." This week the Bush administration suggested that Iraq was providing support for al Qaeda, a charge that had been discredited by this same administration shortly after the September 11 attacks.

"Even people working within our country's intelligence services, and among weapons experts working for government agencies, are pointing out that Bush is deliberately and recklessly twisting facts in order to sell this monstrous plan for war," said Roehm. "And the most outrageous part of this criminal policy is that it is virtually certain that a prime reason for the war is to distract the public from issues that would hurt the Republicans in the November elections."

Reports from SFLR News 93.7

An estimated 500 people have gathered at the San Francisco Federal Building to protest the granting of war powers by the US Congress to President Bush. The War Powers are granted to give the go ahead of bombings and invasion of Iraq. People will be protesting all night and have an overnight vigil. At 7:00am a civil disobedience will occur where people are going to attempt to shut down the Federal Building. Folks are requested to go to the Federal Building and voice their opposition to an endless war.

Wow, 12,000 protesters. Congratulations. Thats about 2.1 % of the population of the city and .9 % of the population of the county that showed up.
Sadly short of anything resembling a majority, but enough to make you think you are something.
For every one of you, there are 50 that think the war effort is just.
Sorry, but you lose.

Say no to an insane war! 10.Oct.2002 23:50

Raven

A vote in Portland today would have more 'no war' votes than yes. . .even numerous Republican Senators around the country are reporting no war phone calls at a 10 to one ratio vs in favour.

The local opinion is well summed up by a Channel 12 reporter who said a few days ago that "It is hard for anyone to support this one" (attack on Iraq)

sometimes the minority is right 11.Oct.2002 10:26

kurt

the majority of people were for slavery. the majority of the people were against civil rights.

generally, i've found that the majority of people are morons.

knoli, you need a brain. 11.Oct.2002 15:18

someguy

because 2% of people protested, you draw the conclusion that for every one of us, there are 50 people that think the war is just? so that implies that everyone who is not actively protesting thinks the war is just? do you actually believe this crap? you are really stretching logic to make yourself believe that you are the majority, here. its quite pathetic.

Trust me maggots, you won't win this one and we will blast Saddam off the face of the earth while you chant in the street and think you are hot shit.
And you may think the the majority are Morons and idiots, but your vote doesnt count on this one.
Smoke some dope, eat some granola and chat a little love song.
Your side is losing this one and you cant/won't change anything.
The fact that the house OVERWHELMINGLY passed a resolution authorizing war says in a resounding voice that NO ONE IS LISTENING TO YOU.
Dance in the street, make a little rucus. It may make you feel empowered. But in reality, as time has proved, you are just having a little party that changes NOTHING.
AHHAHAHAAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA.
So long assholes, I hope you feel as pitiful as you look.
