Former Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse to Address October 5th Peace March in Portland

Former Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse will be the keynote speaker for this Saturday's "No New War on Iraq!" march and rally for peace. The rally will begin at 12:00 p.m. NOON on Saturday, October 5th, starting at the South Park Blocks (Shemanski Park, S.W. Salmon & 9th) in downtown Portland. The peace march will begin at 12:30 p.m. and wind up at Terry Schrunk Plaza, across from the Federal Building (S.W. 3rd & Madison) where the rally will continue. In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, Congresswoman Furse outlined the concerns she will be raising in her Saturday address:

"Why this rush to war? Why now? How does it benefit the American people? Will our children be better fed, better housed, better educated because we bombed other children thousands of miles away?

"At a time when the American economy is reeling, when thousands of jobs are disappearing every day, when retirements and security are being lost, why would we embark on an unjust, prohibitorily expensive military adventure?

"Could it be that this war talk distracts the American people from the real security issues that truly affect them and their families and which are in such present jeopardy: the economy, job security, education, environmental protection.

"Every American needs to ask themselves: "Will my life be better and my children safer after this war?"

"Where in the United States Constitution does it say that we get to choose leaders of other nations? We believe in democracy, which means that the people select their governments. Our money and effort would be better spent in assisting people not destroying them."

In addition to Congresswoman Furse, speakers will include John Linder of Rethinking Schools, Mazen Malik of the Palestinian Arab-American Association, and Aliyah Strauss, president of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom of Israel. Other speakers and musicians will be announced at the rally. The march route will take the demonstration for peace through some of Portland's busiest downtown streets, including those bordering Pioneer Courthouse Square. Permits for this event have been obtained from the City of Portland. Organizers emphasize that the march and rally will be a peaceful, legal demonstration against Bush's plans for a war on Iraq.

The October 5th march and rally is sponsored by Portland Peace & Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group (503-236-3065), Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility (503-274-2720), Portland Peaceful Response Coalition (503-471-1535), American Friends Service Committee (503-230-9427), Oregon PeaceWorks, Jews for Global Justice (503-299-4772), Women in Black, East Timor Action Network/Portland (503-235-4986), War Resisters League, Portland and Oregon Peace Institute, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Multnomah Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers), and others.

The action is also endorsed by Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights, Oregon Wildlife Federation, Friends of Sabeel - North America, Friends of Peace and Justice in the Holy Land, Campaign for Peace with Cuba, the Green Party, the East Side Democratic Club and others.
