Message sent to a University of Oregon Department head

First campus protest action for 2002?

The following was the message sent:

"Good morning. My name is Michael Mau and I am the Central Intelligence Agency's West Coast Recruiting Manager.

I am contacting you because we are interested in obtaining some information on your academic program and meeting some students that may be interested in Government service. We are planning to conduct an information session on your campus on Wednesday, 10/16 at 6:30 p.m. and would appreciate any assistance you can render in disseminating this information to your students.

The event is being processed through the Career Services Center. Our representatives are also interested in briefly visiting with you to obtain a better understanding of your academic program.

Presently we have scheduled representatives from the Directorate of Intelligence (DI) and Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) for this trip. The DI is the analytic branch of the CIA and is searching for students interested in performing analysis on global and regional issues.

Some present areas of interest are international terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, politics and economics of East Asia and a variety of other areas. The FBIS is searching for students whom are fluent in reading and speaking foreign languages to perform translation and interpretation of open source information. The primary languages of interest are Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto and some combinations of western European languages.

If you are available for a visit on 10/16 or require any further information please contact me. I look forward to our trip and appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Sincerely, Michael J. Mau

unannounced visits are the trouble 24.Sep.2002 10:30

007

The Feds come to the various college & university recruitment fairs just like the corporations do. This is no big deal. It is the unannounced visits that should concern us! International students have their computer files turned over without them knowing, and with the so called Patriot Act the school library's are now compelled to turn over information (what books have been checked out?) without library users (students, faculty, staff, & the public) even knowing this is goin on... Big bro watches YOU!

It is a big deal....! 24.Sep.2002 12:19

vigilance

It is a VERY big deal that the CIA is recruiting on college campuses and it is a VERY big deal that the letter also states...OH, by the way, we want to know what you are teaching to "obtain a better understanding of your academic program".

And OH by the way how you are teaching about "international terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, politics and economics of East Asia and a variety of other areas."

During the anti-war years the CIA and FBI came to college campuses and INTERVIEWED professors about what they were teaching about Vietnam. Those prof's that did not tow the line with government propaganda were fired. This happened at OSU and the UofO. I know several people who lost their jobs.

Please do not be wimps about this stuff...Stay awake and stay involved.

Vigilance!
