animal rights

Our battles with Skip Boruchin and Legacy Trading Co., continues. Over the last couple weeks animal rights activists have literally drowned his company out in phone calls, staged demonstrations and press stunts outside his two-bit office, and caught him in a tape recorded conversation divulging HLS's confidential shareholder information in attempt to cut a business deal.

Op-Eds and Letters to the Oklahoma State Attorneys!

They say the pen is mightier than the sword - this week we thought we'd give this approach a try. So put down your placard and pick up that pad of paper shoot letters and story ideas off concerning these crucially important events.

=========== Issue One: ===========
This week - in addition to the phone calls you should still make to Skip, please write a letter to both the Attorney General of Oklahoma and the District Attorney's office of Oklahoma County asking that Skip be investigated for share price and volume manipulation. Send the sample letter below or one similar to it.

Dear Mr. Edmondson and Mr. Lane,

I am writing to request your participation on the crack-down on the corporate crime-wave that has unsettled the American economy. Out of Edmond, Oklahoma resides what we feel is a participant in these corrupt business practices that seek profit at the expense of all else.

Legacy Trading Co., and its president, Stephen 'Skip' Boruchin, are trying to manipulate the share-price and volume of a security it acts as a market maker for - LSRI, Life Sciences Research Inc.

Two weeks ago, animal rights activists attempting to convince and pressure banks, shareholders, and businesses that support LSRI - a famous and very controversial animal testing lab - to withdraw its services from the failing lab were approached by Mr. Boruchin from Legacy Trading Co.

As one of the only market makers matching up buyers to sellers of shares in this stock - Legacy had received phone calls and was subject to protest activity. To attempt to curb this legal and constitutionally protected form of free speech Mr. Boruchin called the campaign in charge of organizing the protests to strike a deal that would help activists close the lab and help him make a profit.

In a tape recorded conversation Mr. Boruchin divulged confidential information about the lab's shareholders. He, as a market maker, had access to information he said no-else did, and offered it in return for limiting protest activity. He gave out the contact information for the owner of 10% of LSRI that recently participated in a private placement transaction.

Mr. Boruchin was caught on tape saying that he wanted the activists to have this information because if this secret shareholder were to receive protest pressure he may sell all of his 1.5 million shares which would create a lot of business for Legacy as one of the only market makers. He explains this thoroughly on the audio tape and even states that while he is not certain if the information being passed along is legal, it is certainly not ethical.

This contents of this tape have already been shared with the NASD (National Association of Security Dealers) the SEC (the Securities and Exchange Commission) and several forms of media including the Financial Times (who ran two stories on the issue - one on the front page), Market Place, and National Public Radio. Media outlets and corporate watchdog organizations across Oklahoma are being contacted currently.

Legacy Trading Co. and Mr. Boruchin are guilty of share-price and volume manipulation and I call on you to launch an investigation into these crooked business practices and stop him from making an illegal profit.

Respectfully Yours,

=========== ISSUE TWO: ===========

HLS, with all of its other wonderful attributes of torturing and killing animals, and putting toxic and dangerous products onto the market, ALSO hates the US Constitution and is against freedom of speech. Surprised?

In so many press articles while whining about the amount of direct action happening against them - HLS has repeatedly said they do not have a problem with protests and support people's right to express dissent. Their own actions this week prove this be yet another one of their lies.

HLS has filed a briefing this week to the Franklin Township Court trying to ban the December 1st National Demonstration against it - by saying it does not have the means to protect itself from hundreds of demonstrators. HLS - which currently enjoys a pathetic injunction limiting protest activity and size based solely on traffic safety issues is challenging SHAC's attempts to have the road in front of the lab closed and injunction lifted.

Lets make HLS just as unpopular with free speech advocates as they are with animal advocates. Write editorials, letters to editors, and contact these newspapers and ask that this issue be covered - exposing HLS as the fascist cowards they are.

Sample Letter to Editor:

Below is a sample Letter To The Editor. However, we *strongly* advise that you write one of your own as the paper may be less motivated to print a form letter they've received hundreds of times. Be sure to keep the number of words in check for the paper's requirements (500 for the Star Ledger; "brief" for the Home News Tribune). Also, the request the inclusion of your full name, address, and daytime phone number. Lastly, it is suggested that you email or fax the letters, as the judge will be ruling on Friday, and snail mail is unlikely to deliver in time.

To The Editor,

For over two years Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) has protested against Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) in East Millstone, NJ. HLS has sought, and received, a court order limiting SHAC's protest activity at its facility, including limiting the number of protesters allowed to fifty.

SHAC is planning a protest for HLS's fiftieth birthday on Sunday, December 1st. SHAC's lawyer has submitted a request to Judge Mahon, of the Superior Court of New Jersey in Somerset County, that the injunction be lifted to allow the expected approximately 500 protesters in front of HLS.

In response HLS has filed a counterclaim, stating that it is exceedingly difficult for the police to control a crowd of 500, and also, that the lab has up to forty employees working on Sundays and that they will be disturbed by the protesters.

Since when are protesters required to limit their activities because the police cannot 'control' them? (Not to mention that officers have effectively 'controlled' much larger groups of protesters in the past.) Similarly, what does HLS think about freedom of speech when it urges the very courts that are supposed to protect it to stifle it because its employees will be *disturbed*!

The First Amendment guarantees us the right to protest, not the right to protest in groups of 50 or less, and not the right to protest as long as no one is annoyed by it. The injunction itself is blatantly Unconstitutional; if Judge Mahon does not lift it according to SHAC's request, he will further resign freedom of speech to the dustbin, and demonstrate that, rather than being an impartial guarantor of our Constitutional Rights, HLS and its corporate clout have Mohon in their pockets.

Every week a different company or individual associated with HLS is singled out to receive phone, email, and fax blockades from anti-HLS campaigners around the country. Many companies have severed their ties with HLS after being the Puppy Killer of the Week due to the sheer volume of calls, emails, and faxes from supporters calling, emailing, and faxing repeatedly. So forward this everywhere and play your part in closing HLS! If you'd like to do a disruption, demo, or other action against the Puppy Killer of the Week, go right ahead!

Take advantage of pay phones! Especially with Toll Free Numbers!

**** Get a black fax to send here (or you can just use a black piece of paper and give your target's fax machine a run for its money...or ink!):

you will need acrobat reader to download this. get it for free here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

**** A great way to block the number that you are calling/faxing from is to dial *67 BEFORE you dial the number. Great for sending black faxes! (Unfortunately doesn't work for 800 numbers)

Also...an idea suggested by one of our supporters:
I have discovered a toll-free and easy way to keep your targets' phone lines blocked up. Comedy Central Inc. has a new television show about prank phone calls, entitled Crank Yankers. On the Crank Yankers homepage (which can be accessed directly through www.comedycentral.com) is a tool called 'Crank-A-Friend.' All you do is enter the target's phone number, name, e-mail address, and then your own name and e-mail address (which can just be made up for discretion). Within seconds, an irritatingly long phone call will arrive at the phone number you specified. It is free to use, legal, and you can drive HLS and their allies crazy with it, especially if done in unison.

After a campaign starts against a partner company of HLS, e-mail accounts that are targeted by SHAC are being blocked. Here is a "work around" that some supporters will find helpful.

Go to the company Web site and use the "contact us" button. Use an *asterisk* (shift + 8) to fill in the required fields . An *asterisk* is a "wild card" and the computer form sees it as text. Type or paste message in the comment area and send.

They won't block their company account because they need the business from the web. We can flood their customer e-mail and it's legal.

Some companies have put filters on their email systems that direct email with HLS related terms directly to the trash. Try taking out words like "HLS", "Huntingdon Life Sciences," "SHAC," "Animal Cruelty," etc.

**** For auto e-mailing, that uses encryption devices that masks who you are: http://www.animaldefenseleague.com/cgi-bin/mail.html
