( The data above can be seen in the full report here: http://www.jihadunspun.net/articles/08212002-Casualty.Report/casualty02.html )

Following the Vietnam War, American Presidents realized that it was important to limit American body bags in order to sustain public support. Presidents increasingly relied on "alternative" means of fighting wars as one strategy, e.g., proxy wars, like Nicaragua and Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Alas, when proxy wars are not possible, the media must be controlled -- directly or indirectly -- in order to deal with the potential backlash in American public opinion. This is what we see in our war in Afghanistan.

Executives at CNN and other media outlets are on record as saying it would be morbid to report on civilian casualties (gee, I guess journalism only counts for reports on what's happening with the local zoo). God forbid the American media grows a spine and embraces investigative journalism again. God forbid that they dare report how many Americans have been killed.

In today's political culture, the media is more than happy to investigate on were a President's third leg has been, but sustained coverage of the true scandals, regardless of party, are marginalized. If that doesn't change, the American empire will go the way of Rome.

Regardless of whether or not you support the war, the point of this article is to underscore that you should support the notion that the American media should report and investigate. Sadly, many Americans no longer believe this. If you're not among that group, get off your duff and write a letter to the editor and/or producer.

category listed in order:

Canadian Soldiers
250-kilogram laser-guided bomb
Four Canadian soldiers of the 3rd Batallion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group killed by US friendly fire near Kandahar, with another eight soldiers seriously wounded.

Khomar Kalay
Afghan Allies
A friendly fire incident, when US troops mistook a group of allies for Al-Qaida fighters and opened fire

Azzam Publications
Band Taimur
US Soldiers
Small Arms Fire
U.S. troops were set up by by local tribesmen who reported the supposed presence of Arab Mujahideen so that they would attack and inflict heavy casualties upon their rivals.

--i don't know if some of the reported casualties and injuries--which generally have been reported--seem strangely vague (those where "official" descriptions not withstanding), but i can only wonder how one might manipulate the public revelation of such information. it's easy to see the way that deaths effect support for continued warfare.

has anyone seen or can anyone project the *official* US response to the supposed war casualties and the effect it may be having on the citizenry?

also, i was looking for the deaths relating to this 'story'

"Tribal Affairs Minister Mohammed Arif Noorzai, who headed a joint Afghan-U.S. team that conducted a separate investigation of the July 1 attack, said the American raid was ''a mistake.''

''All our people reject this report. Anybody with any common sense would reject this report,'' he told The Associated Press.

''Americans are our friends and they are here because they want to help us. Everyone makes a mistake. The matter is behind us now.'' Noorzai said."

so i guess Afghanis (nor Muslims) aren't Americas friends and sometimes sorry isn't good enough and evil-doers *must* be punished.

i wonder what Noorzai and Karzai will be saying after the construction of that oil pipeline in their country is done.

'"Would the Americans forgive us if we killed two Americans and give them two tents in return?

"The Taliban used to lock us in jail but they would not bomb us and dishonour our women," he said'

American Media is American Propaganda 24.Sep.2002 05:26

bullshit detector

The American Media may or may not be lying about US military casaulties, but they are definitely lying about how many Afghan civilans the US military has massacared since the begininng of its Terror War. Some of the reports--such as one report by ASsociated Propagandists... I mean Associated Press--put the Afghan civilian death count only at "several hundred."

Yeah right. The USA will kill several dozen civilians with a single Daisy Cutter Bomb, and the A.P. comes up with a figure in the hundreds.

The US media does a better job of undercounting the number of murdered Afghan civilians than Katherine Harris and the Florida Election board does of undercounting votes in the 2000 election!
