Press Contact: Peace House Executive Director Justine Cooper  peacehse@mind.net

David Barsamian, producer of The Alternative Radio program, progressive journalist, and author, will speak in Ashland on September 24 at 7PM. He will be at Mulkey Auditorium, upstairs in Churchill Hall, at Southern Oregon University. His topic is "United States of Amnesia: How the Media Construct Memory and Invent History." The talk is sponsored by Peace House's America at War Lecture Series, and co-sponsored by Ecology Center of the Siskiyous, S.O.U. Media Collective, Rural Organizing Project, and ANSWER. Admission is free; questions and donations are welcome.

Barsamian's most recent books include Propaganda and the Public Mind, Conversations with Noam Chomsky, and The Decline and Fall of Public Broadcasting. He has interviewed such people as Ralph Nader, Molly Ivins, Howard Zinn, and Angela Davis. An advocate for change from the ground up, he believes that the groundswell of public awareness is fed by access to experts who look outside the Orwellian "groupthink" box. His award winning Alternative Radio program is one such grass-roots effort. Based in Boulder, Colorado, it provides a forum for controversy and debate, and gives a voice for groups that aren't aired by the six media giants that now dominate US mass media. From a back alley attic, it goes out free to over 125 stations and millions of enthusiastic listeners.

Barsamian will also speak in Grants Pass at the Museum of Art on September 23, and in Klamath Falls at the Klamath County Library on September 25.

Peace House, based in Ashland, is Southern Oregon's center for education and action on nuclear disarmament, non-violent conflict resolution, and care for the Earth and its inhabitants.
