Get Gordon Smith to pay for police overtime ! 23.Aug.2002 09:51

protester

I think it would be great to have some concerted action to get Gordon Smith to pay for police overtime and for damages for the protesters that were hurt.

Gordon Smith made 1 million dollars yesterday using Bush.
The police closed a huge area of downtown for almost the whole day.
Who is going to pay those businesses affected in that area of downtown? Are they even going to ask for compensation?

Who is going to pay for police and state troopers overtime?
Obviously if Gordon Smith hadn't invited Bush for that dinner there would have been no need for closing down downtown and having hundreds of state troopers shooting pepper spray just because they didn't want anyway within 2 blocks of the Hilton.

I am wondering if there is anything that can be done legally about this.
If there is, that would be a great precedent.
It is outrageous to me that public funds are used in order to help some private politician raise an obscene amount of money for a political campaign.
Especially at a time when Portland as a city struggles with its finances.
Put pressure on Smith to reimburse the public costs of his private dinner.
No matter if you are republican or democrat you should still be outraged that you tax money is used to help a politician raise money.
Obviously Bush didn't come to Portland for anything else. He didn't do anything else in Portland except give a rah-rah talk for Smith.
